A defensive big was preferred in the offseason, the Rockets explicitly said so, and in fact they were going after Tyson Chandler and had a trade in place. It didn't work out.

Brad Miller was a fall-back option, and he has played out his role as well as one could have expected, but I think the Rockets intention was and has been to go after a defensive center when one they like becomes available. But they seem perhaps too reluctant to pursue unproven players, or I should say players whose lower-bound productivity they don't have a good read on.

Leeb, I agree with you that we should have started developing a young athletic defensive 5 long ago. It's perhaps Morey's biggest blunder. However, I think you underestimate both Lee's skills (inconsistent play? no relationship to a starter forced to play inconsistent minutes?), his value in the right setting (bringing up the disfunctional Nets? Come on!), his value in relation to his contract, and his value as insurance in case our borderline All Star caliber starting SG gets another one of his myriad of off the wall injuries. Yeah, you undervalue Lee. I'm not saying you overvalue someone like Asik, although he's had some health issues himself in the past, hopefully in the rear view mirror, but you do undervalue Lee. I doubt that the Bulls do, but we'll see. Lee looks like a perfect fit for the Bulls, at least to me.

True durvasa, but my point is this problem was here 3 yrs ago. If you read some of my post 3 or 4 yrs ago, I was talking about getting another big on the bench.

You know what I really saw when Yao missed games and deke filled in? The rockets never missed Yao's offense. The rockets won alot of games with Deke and chuck hayes playing center when Yao was out. This lead me to think that if the rockets ever could man the center with 2 big guys who are more defnsive than offensive, they will be ok. After 07, Deke was already year to year in playing. Thats why in 08 and deke really year to year and Yao was an injury waiting to happen again, I thought it would be great to get a young guy on the bench. Hence talking about drafting Deandre Jordan adding guys like Mbenga,or just adding size to the frontline to develop. Instead, they drafted Ray Lewis with a basketball, waited season after season to see if Deke was coming back, and prayed Yao wouldnt go down. Right now and alot of people disagree with me, but if the Rockets can get a guy like thabeet, I think it would do wonders and give the team a free look for this season and next. Of course, there are no guarantees adelman would even play him right now. In memphis, they have gone more with a combo of gasol, randolph, and arthur. Since they are in the thick of it, they're not trying to continue his development. The rockets percieve themselves in it and may not play him either, but adelman may not return and after the recent yrs of poor defense, the next coach is probably going to be more of a defensive minded coach. So, I'm looking at him for next year to see if he can be a very good defensive player. I think he can be a top flight rim protector. The current makeup of this team would benefit great from this type of player. Asik is in that mold also and has a lower price tag.

I agree with you guys. We should go after Asik and Haseem Thabeet. See which one works out. In fact centers are so overvalued these days? Morey should devise his whole overstocking strategy on big PFs and centers with skill from now on. Sell them high to the rest of the league or keep them if they are good. Forget about smaller players from now on. Draft two centers if need be. Draft a tall center and tall PF with skills. Thats the NBAs high sell trend.

11 rebounds in 14 minutes for Ask tonight. I didn't watch the game but those numbers are impressive. I see why Morey might be interested in him.

I think threads like this, the Lowry and Harden threads prove that we shouldn't doubt Morey when he aggressively pursues a certain player. He's right, we're wrong.

    Wow!!

Can't believe I posted this. I'll be the first to admit that I was horribly and irrevocably wrong.

Just for the record I was strongly in favor of signing him this past offseason. My opinion changed a bit after enduring the horrible collapse last season.

I thought you were asking if I would want to trade Omer Asik for Courtney Lee now, not back then. My bad! ;)
