I just don't think that McCain would run against a sitting Kerry. McCain would run in 2008 if W gets re-elected. Of course, I think that McCain would be a fool to believe that the RNC in 2008 would back him instead of his challenger.

I never implied there would be an impact. Of course there won't be one. It's still pretty darn interesting. Email me through the board if you want to know about it.

I think McCain will run in 08 no matter who's elected this time around. If it's Kerry v. McCain, I think we'll see an unusually polite, respectful race. I would love it.

    does this shock you?

    http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=536&e=4&u=/ap/20041015/ap_on_el_pr/military_poll

    --
WASHINGTON - When asked whom they would trust as commander in chief, people in military service and their families chose President Bush (news - web sites) over Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites), a decorated Vietnam veteran, by almost a 3-to-1 margin.

Bush, who served in the Texas Air National Guard, was more trusted by 69 percent while 24 percent said they trusted Kerry more, according to the National Annenberg Election Survey released Friday.

Among all Americans, Bush has a narrower advantage on trust to be commander in chief, 50-41.

The military sample was far more likely to be Republican than Democratic, which could help explain the more favorable view of the president. Four in 10, 43 percent, of the military sample said they were Republicans, while 19 percent said Democrats and 27 percent independents.

Those in the military and their families have a more favorable view of Bush than Americans generally, and they take a more optimistic view about Iraq (news - web sites), the economy and the nation's direction.

A majority in the military sample, 64 percent, said the country is on the right track. Among Americans generally, 55 percent said the country is headed in the wrong direction.

The National Annenberg Election Survey found that seven in 10, 69 percent, had a favorable view of Bush. Only three in 10, 29 percent, had a favorable view of Kerry.

The Annenberg poll, which does not report head-to-head preferences, did not ask the military respondents whom they support for president. The report cited a 1948 law that prohibits polling members of the military about their voting intent.

The poll of 655 in the active military and their families was taken Sept. 22-Oct. 5 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. Their answers were compared to those of 2,436 adults surveyed between Sept. 7-Oct. 3 with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

I don't think basso will mind me quoting his email to me to say he asked how I could reconcile the alleged disconnect between his public and private preference for president.

Look, I don't like it. But I understand it. I don't believe Kerry's against gay marriage, but I understand why he has to say he is. I also understand why McCain has to say he's for Bush. It would be utter suicide for a McCain presidential bid to back Kerry. It's heartening to me that, given their relationship, while he's being a good party guy (of necessity if not preference), he refuses to be a party to the most disingenuous criticisms of Kerry. In fact, he's openly disdained them.

As for the other issues you raised with the story, basso, yeah, it was a public place but the person knew only me and my girlfriend were listening. And they really didn't have any reason to make it up. If you think the person was making it up, that's fine. I don't believe it for a second. I talked to them and they seemed very sincere, very matter of fact. (Using "them" so as not to betray gender, even though everyone in this thread knows who I'm talking about by now.)

Like I said, take it for what it's worth. I've always suspected McCain would prefer Kerry as a president and as a commander-in-chief and I've said so here many times. No one I've sent the email to has been surprised by it, because it's not surprising. Just interesting.

I'm outraged! outraged!! i say, that you would out me on a public bbs...

as i said, if true, i think it demonstrates a cunning and deviousness on mccain's part that most of us have assumed he doesn't possess. just because it might be directed at a candidate you disdain in this instance, doesn't mean he's not capable of the same behaivior in reverse. in this instance, his public stance is the more important, whatever he does behind the curtain (mental image of bill o'reilly w/ falafal be gone!)
