Spoiler Most people don't know that back in 1912 Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery at Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo
Took a long time to bring it home but it was a brilliant landing. Very good lesson about Cinco de Mayo and I think it would be worth it for the country to do a better job about explaining this peice of American history. But since the GOP is busy excluding the slave trade from history books, I'm sure there is no chance of adding this to books.
well, its a mexican holiday, where kids doesnt go to school, and some people doesnt work that day,but thats it, people doesnt go party, because is cinco de mayo. so here it is another answer. Spoiler I really hope the ones that voted for "Mexican Independence" were joking. the mexicans remembers this date, because it was a win against a very strong french army (with 8,000 very well armed men) against a very bad trained and with little experience mexican army (and 4,000 poorly armed) and it was a moral victory and a boost of confidence but this battle only delayed the french intervention in Mexico, so this is a nice underdog story. and its most celebrated in Puebla, having a reenactament of the historic battle.
How come no one celebrates seis de Mayo? The day the French Army came back and slaughtered the hung over Mexicans
