have kids at home...they dont' have cell phones. good for my older boy when he stays home alone...good for babysitter. minus the kids we'd be cell phones only...and once they reach a certain age, i'm sure we will be.
same here. i chat alot! plus with our alarm system, we need a land line or else the monthly rate goes up to do the satellite phone thing. plus i LOVE my land line number. it's really awesome. feels like a security blanket for hurricanes, always good reception, etc.
Agreed. We have kids and we are visited by many old-school family members. So, for families, a land-line makes more sense. If my parents,in-laws, and kids were gone, we'd probably not have a land-line.
I have my land line for two purposes: 1. When I fill out forms of any kind, I never put in my cell phone. Always the home phone. That way I never, ever get telemarketing or business solicitation calls on my cell phone, and I can almost guarantee that the only calls I will ever receive on my cell phone are from friends and people I *actually* want to talk to. 2. My mom comes over to visit every now and then, and when she does, all of her friends and acquaintances call her frequently on the land line (and she makes lots of calls using it as well).
So for all of you folks that only have cell phone, how much are you paying for unlimited minutes? How many of you are single and only have to pay the one line's worth of unlimited minutes? Most plans seem to have an unlimited package starting around $90-$100. To add a second line to that is generally $10 off. At a minimum, wouldn't a two-line unlimited minutes package cost at least $170/month plus tax/fees? We pay much less than that for 3 cell lines (myself, wife, parents) of cell phone service plus land line service (which includes 100 minutes of rollover long distance per month).
i've never had a landline when i started to be the primary bill handler (we had one at the apt when my old roommate had bills in his name) just used cell phones I have at&t that my mom shares with my my monthly bill is around 130 a month for two lines and its high because i have an iphone so tack on an additional what 40-50 bucks a month for the data/text plan for that? luckily for me most of my friends have at&t Also during the day i tend to make calls from work using my work line. and my work subsidizes some of my phone bill since I get a lot of "off hours" texts and phone calls, they wouldnt do that for a landline so it works out for me not to have one. I've asked my roommates if they wanted one but they both said no they just use their cell phones anyway no need to add more unnecessary bills
Not in my area, nor have I ever seen them offering for a speed good enough for Halo 3. Edit: They have started offering it in my area, and at the speed I need. Last time I checked it said unavailable.
I've always had a land line and still do. Actually use it quite a bit. For one thing, it's a lot more comfortable to talk on the bigger cordless phones for long periods of time than it is to talk on my tiny cellphone that drops the call every time I get near the kitchen. And it's kind of a pain in the butt to have to carry my cellphone in my pocket around the house.
That is exactly why I've been hesitant to get rid of my land line. Solicitation does not stop just because you sign up on the do not call list. I still get all the companies I do business with calling my home phone offering every damn product or service in their arsenal to sell me. I don't want to put my cell phone number as my home phone number with any of these companies...cause they will just call it instead. And, you pretty much have to answer it or they will not stop calling it. I completely ignore my home phone when they call...so I don't care there. But, I care when it comes to my cell phone. But, I'm getting ripped by AT&T on a land line with no features or long distance. It still costs $32 a month...unless you do some package deal bundling with other services like Internet or TV. I know I can get a better deal if I want to move my land line service to a new company. I may have to do that...just to keep the land line for all the bogus calls I get from companies I do business with. Does anyone know...can you just wipe your phone numbers with all the utility companies or other companies you do business with? I would rather they not have my phone number at all...cause they just abuse the privilege. I've never actually been contacted by any of these companies for a good reason...other than them trying to pimp more money out of me.
You use your old, disconnected phone number so some other poor smuck who now has that phone number assigned to them gets all your solicitation calls? lol...someone hates you
The problem with this is that you assume that there are no legitimate calls. If I sign up for an insurance policy or purchase a new product, I want the company to be able to contact me if there is an issue with my account or if they have important information I need to know. I want my credit card company to have a phone number that they can use to reach me if there is unusual activity on my account. My problem is when they decide to call me incessantly to try and sell me identity theft plans, or sell my info to other marketing companies, or bug the crap out of me when I decide to cancel service to try and get me to come back. If the message is important enough, they can leave voicemail, and if need be I'll call them back. But one thing is for sure, they won't be calling me on my cellphone.
Vonage, my friend, Vonage. Or if you'd like, one of the cheaper VoIP alternatives. I pay about the same amount (taxes included) and I get every feature I could ever need, including the ever-convenient voicemail to email-attachment feature that allows me to listen to important messages immediately from work if/when they arrive. They have a cheaper 1500 minute plan at $15/mo+taxes ... only reason I don't use that is because my mom talks on the phone a LOT when she's here.
As long as your computer is up and runnning and you are connected to that computer to answer/receive calls.
Why would DirecTV be your reason for having a landline. I've had DirecTV without a landline for many years. Unless you have one of those really old receivers that requires a landline in order to update??
I'm with you fatty. My last land line was in 2001. Dish and DirectTV (before I switched to UVerse) both tried to tell me I needed a landline. I called them on their bullsh!t because a dry loop works just fine. Even home alarms can be done with a cellular hookup at the house so the burglars can't cut the (non-existent) phone line.
