I'm annoyed by people who get annoyed by bad grammar. I think you handicap the language and censor speakers by insisting it meet with certain rules. Every little idiosyncrasy of speech still communicates something about a person and what they are trying to express. Rules are good and communication is impossible without them. You need to know the rules to make the breaking of them meaningful. For example, if my wife asked me to take out the trash and I said, "No, I won't," it would mean something quite different from "Nah b****, I ain't gonna do ****!" It's more confrontational and aggressive; it implies a lack of respect for the person you're talking to. You can get a lot of communication mileage out of butchering the language (and throwing in some cuss words helps). So, I don't complain about how people talk; every twitch is a communication one way or another.
I used to co-op at a company where every person who wanted to interject would start off their sentence using "So, ah..." It was a constant source of amusement for me and our other co-op student. That was annoying, but it made for lots of laughs when we saw Lumbergh do it Office Space.
can't stand it. I hear celebrities doing it more than most people. While we're on grammatical r****dedness, I also hate it when people type/write "should of". i.e. "I should of done that yesterday." It doesn't make the slightest bit of sense! Can't people see that when they write it? Okay, if you don't proofread, fine..cause I usually don't either. But to repeat it again and again in conversations and replies is ridiculous. There are many others, but that one sticks out to me the most..
I have NEVER read a Shakespeare book, Jeff. Thanks for that... I didn't even think about it. In the "Man Inside" thread, there's another reason why I don't watch "Much Ado About Nothing." JuanValdez, I seriously doubt that chopping up the English language gets you anywhere fast. Slang is great but when people do it without knowing they do it, it loses its credibility and its sense of culture. Everything is out of the window. Maria Todd? First name is MEXICAN. Last name is WHITE. Is BLACK. pretends to be WHITE, and only when talking about African American stuff she acts black. I am confused. WTF?
You're absolutely right. I take that back. I am surprised that not that much people noticed the "...so..." at the end of conversations...
