Doug Collins is solid and he is a smart basketball guy. He loves Yao and prasied him alot for going Galidator on the Lakers last night. I miss Marv and the ZAR doing Sunday games from the old days on NBC! Give me JVG, Hubie and Marv in a 3 man crew, now thats a fantastic crew but tell Marv to leave the leather at home!
He does a great job, though I think he does talk a lot sometimes. I think he's sort of like Hubie Brown, I mean I guess it's natural when you have former coaches as color commentators. Btw, Mike Fratello doesn't count, he has had past commentating experience as we all know before he went back to coaching.
I hate Doug Collins. He hates the Rockets and tries to disguise it by praising Yao. Both Collins and Harlan were so depressed last night watching their beloved lakers lose. Why cant we get the signature "BANG" when one of our guys hits a three? (Harlan) That crew sucks, but basically all of them will root for the Lakers other than Van Gundy and Reggie Miller.
I like Collins, but I like JVG and Hubbie better. Guys I can't stand are Reggie Miller and Mark Jackson. They were just like clueless fans posting in the GARM. While Collins, JVG, Fartelo, and Hubbie will go in depth to analyze the game. Especially Hubbie, I really learned a lot about basketball game listening to him.
no, i dont hate him. in fact he the best color commentator there is. just because he says things like rockets are not a good comeback team(which is true btw) doesn't make him a hater or an idiot.
No, I don't hate him. He's not the smartest guy in the world, but he gives everybody their credit especially Yao. He has been praising him for a long time and I remember 2 years ago he said the same thing about him in the all-star game saying How much he respect he has for him running up and down the court with that size. I like Hubie Brown and JVG better, but hate Doug Collins? Really? Unnecssary.
Doug Collins is a very good analyst, in my opinion. The only person currently doing national TV NBA broadcasts that I feel is better than Collins is Hubie Brown. Jeff Van Gundy is third, to me, but not by much. I personally think that former coaches tend to make better analysts than former players do. Analyst/Coaches are people too. They'll have their biases. But I find that, usually, they call it down the middle in terms of what's happening on the court at any particular point in time. I'm particularly impressed with Hubie Brown. I can't remember any game he's done where he wasn't complimentary of ANY player, or focus on what teams do well, or what matchups are their for either team to exploit. He's seen more basketball than God, I think. And he talks like it.
both collins and sager are nice guys. gotta a picture taken with both during all star weekend a few years ago. craig sager seemed pretty busy too when he did it.
Doug Collins is one of the most annoying commentators out there. -More than often he will state something obvious. Team is on a 20-0 run. "The momentum is now on...." No, really? -A terrific play is made and he will go completely off-tangent to garner attention. Hakeem was kicking David Robinson and Spur's ass in Game 2 of 1995 playoffs. He was making some crazy moves and Doug kept rambling about confidence of Rocket's team. Doug? Hello? Did you even notice that play? Similarly, Tmac rides Bradley in 2005 playoffs and instead of getting excited about the play, he is talking gibberish. Doug, please ****in watch the game. You have the best seat in the house. Enjoy it. Now is not the time to try really hard to sound smart so that someone can offer you a job. -In an attempt to stand out, he goes to coaches before the game and tries to gather some stats or some story. He then tries to fit it in somewhere in the commentary even if it has no relation whatsoever to the play on hand. On top of it, that inside story he thinks he got his hands on, its friggin known to everyone who even remotely follows NBA. You cant tell he doesn't follow the teams. He just looks at stats during game to talk about something. -In a whiny voice he will to do the "oh no bla bla". "Oh no! it's a 5 point swing. If player x had made that and player y had not made that 3, the score would have been xx-yy. Instead its a 5 point swing." No **** Doug! That really helps me out with my algebra. Brilliant! -Sometimes, based on his comment, you will understand why his coaching career has been a flop. In order to sound like a genius, he will say that team needs to drive and force the official to make a call in the closing seconds of a game. Doug, you will rarely get that call. No wonder you are not coaching, you dumbass.
I enjoyed Doug Collins last night... the only thing that annoyed me was that the bunch had NOTHING to say initially about Artest's lefty dunk. Other than that, id take Doug over most of the NBA commentators these days.
I like Doug Collins he does what commentators do they change sides when the other team goes up ! They are not suppose to be biased like Steve Smith and that other arse on NBA TV who definately wanted to lick the Blazers Balls !!
here's the deal. Collins is decent, probably above average, but that speaks to the amount of crap that is out there besides Hubie and JVG. with regard to the comments in the 4th quarter about here come the Lakers, etc. That is somewhat understandable considering that most semi neutral basketball fans would think the same thing, and considering how the 4 games in the regular season went down. Howevuh! Collins should be coached to balance that with comments like "The rockets continue to go answer each basket by LA, and the Lakers better make a move or they may run out of time." Or, "The rockets have controlled the tempo and tone of this game from the start, and this is a game that the Lakers are supposed to win, if they want to be considered championship contenders." My point is that Collins' comments about "Here come the Lakers" is natural and understandable, but he should balance that out with some of what I have suggested. Hubie and JVG do that routinely, and that's what sets them apart (in addition to their unmatched basketball acumen).
after a few minutes, his voice becomes rambling like and my brain just ignores the monotoned, unenergetic voice.
After listening to the commentating team of last night of Kevin harlan and Doug Collins over and over, all I notice is how much they both go out of their way to praise Yao and the Rockets. With quotes like "I gotta tell you, I love this Yao Ming. You talk about giving your heart and soul. You know how hard it is for him every single night to drive that body up and down the floor?" Collins said with 7:08 in 4th. "YAO MING PUTS IT IN FROM OUTSIDE with his 22nd point! I'm so proud!" Harlan said with 3:00 in 4th. As a result, I don't mind this broadcasting team at all. In fact, it reminds me of local broadcasting with lots of Houston love and constant Lakers and Jazz criticism.
Doug Collins couldn't even watch the replay of when Yao went down and praised his ability throughout the game. He also provides great insight based on scouting and research that frankly, other commentators just don't do. For example, he was explaining how Chuck Hayes is a good post defender and how he uses leverage to limit offensive players. Many commentators would assume that there is colossal disadvantage against Hayes in that matchup because they don't know crap about Hayes. Like others have said, JVG, Doug Collins, and Hubie Brown are the best in the business. However, I do think Hubie is getting kinda old and that's causing his eyes to fail him on obvious missed calls by refs which he believes are correct.
