I find it funny but that might be because I'm not jewish and I wasn't around during the holocaust. The holocaust (like most historical events) is more of an abstract concept to me.

I think in Finland, or any other place on the Holocaust bus tour, they could probably be justified in self-censorship. Just like if some radio DJ in Atlanta started playing Johnny Rebel songs, or reading the Cornerstone speech, or something.

No threats have been made. After the cartoonist apologized, there hasn't been that much discussion and the small Jewish community in Finland hasn't reacted in any way, either.

I have a tendency to like dark humor quite a bit but while this comic doesn't offend me personally, I think it was a good decision to take it out. In comparison though, I have seen multiple worse jokes about, for example, Stalin's deeds but nobody really seems to be that offended from those.

Yeah, it's a bit of a tricky question here. While Finland didn't allow transfers of Finnish Jews to Germany even under extortion, it however deported 8-12 Jew refugees who died in the German camps. There were also some prisoner exhanges between Germany and Finland, which lead to a small number of Jews being killed.

Finland actually gave up more communists and also some criminals to the Germans since they were deemed to be dangerous as possible Soviet agents.

The Jews in Finland also had full civil rights during the war. There were hundreds of Finnish Jews fighting in the military and at least one was awarded an iron cross by the Germans. There were also synagogues on the front, which had to have been a bizarre experience for the German troops assigned to Finland during the war.

I find this view interesting coming from you since didn't you criticize Comedy Central's decision to bleep out parts of the South Park episode that mentioned Mohammed when that was as much of an act of self-censorship as this was.

Killing Jews and making soap out of them is offensive.

So is giving them bars of soap to trick them into thinking they were in a shower, rather than in a gas chamber.

The difference is that it appears that Comedy Central seemed to self-censor out of fear as there had been threats, whereas this Finnish newspaper seemed to have realized that their comic strip was tasteless and decided to pull it when there had not been any threats. It's not the same - in one case it means bowing to pressure, in the other one it just means that they had thought better of it.

In addition, Comedy Central's decision was inconsistent with the way they had allowed the show to run - they did not self-censor when the show made fun of Jesus, Buddha, etc., but they did when it came to Mohammed and after threats had been made.

Also, I believe there is a huge difference between making fun of some guy that lived many centuries ago and making fun of 6 million people having gotten killed under gruesome circumstances.
