Sullinger fell so hard because he has back problems at such a young age which bodes very poorly on his career health. He was a consensus top 5 pick before that.

I was going with a scenario where we were not chasing FA's. No pursuit of Harden or Howard.
Taylor in our rotation makes the team defense better. That team would get into the playoffs.
My point is, 2012 was a much better draft than people were thinking.

Speaking of Tyler Zeller, if you are to believe the scuttlebutt that he would have been the pick, but they were afraid Dallas was going to take White before we could nab him with that last pick, we could have theoretically ended up with Zeller and Jones. Zeller, D. Mo, or Jones would have had to be traded to free up cap room for Dwight. Our real comparison here is whether or not D. Mo has a better career than Tyler Zeller. Royce White is really irrelevant if you think about it that way.

Also we should thank Dallas for taking Zeller because we would have ended up with Royce White and Tyler Zeller and no Terrence Jones at all. Now THAT would have sucked.

I understand the thread is about Jones making up for White, but hasn't Patrick Beverly made up for that pick?

Personally I am finally happy that one out of the dozen 6' 10 Power Forwards that we have drafted the past few years has panned out.

Overall Morey has been very good about the draft and that is a major reason why we have Dwight and Harden today.

You usually can't look back at past drafts because you never know how each player would have reacted to each teams culture/city/team structure/playing time/etc.

Honestly we knew Royce was a huge risk. I can live with that, but Marcus Morris over Kenneth Faried always upset me. Or was it Patterson?

7 starters and maybe 3 future all-stars....mmm not sure about that draft being that deep, but its still a little early. However there are already a ton of guys already out of the league which is rare.

Although I do like Taylor, but pretty much every team missed on him just like everyone missed on Parsons. Can't really single out Morey for missing on a player when everyone else did too.

However your scenario with the Rockets taking Henson at 12 NEEDS a side note even in hypothetical scenario. No wing player taken at 12, and very likely no Harden trade as the Thunder were looking for a high upside wing replacement. You can't just throw out trades and free agency going on at the time because it is all connected.

Knowing Morey, had he not been in another phase in the rebuilding process with the 12th pick, I wouldn't doubt for a second that he'd take Henson even with a million other PF's already on the roster.

Royce White did not pan out. That does not necessarily make drafting him a "mistake". Most draft picks do not work out. Would you call losing a blackjack or poker hand a "mistake"? Morey went for a flush with Royce and wound up with nothing. Big deal.

I hope there is not the expectation that every draft pick supposed to become a regular rotation player - much less a productive starter.

Pretty much. It was a good draft overall. Royce White was a bust and hopefully will soon be forgotten, like Joey Dorsey.

Morey's strategy in the draft is designed to waste picks. Role players and mid tier players that aren't "flops" but aren't spectacular are easy to find via free agency and trading. Morey's goal in all his drafts thus far have been to land a superstar via high risk - high reward drafting. Royce White is the quintessential high risk high reward pick, as he had top 5 potential but due to personal reasons fell to us. Im sure he expected Royce to be a waste 90% of the time and an allstar 10% of the time. Now that we have our core superstars I would imagine he will take a slightly different approach in the draft.

honestly only a handful of guys drafted after royce are doing anything they are

    Tony Wroten
    Miles Plumlee
    Jared Sullinger
    Andrew Nicholson
    Jeffrey Taylor

    and of those

Wroten and sullinger are the only ones producing anything notable. With T Jones, drafting sullinger would have been redundant and Jones is better

Wroten is putting up numbers but his shooting percentages are awful and if he ends up being anything in the NBA its a demar derozan/rudy gay type who needs the ball way too much and takes too many bad shots

I wish we took jones at 16 and just traded for a future first

Lucky we picked T. Jones where we did. He was an absolute beast in college. It's funny because MKG and Ant went 1 and 2 and yet Jones somehow falls when he was every bit as important to that team. No, I am not saying he is Anthony Davis, but he easily should've been a top 10 pick.

We all know drafting is a hit and miss. In retrospect, Morey did quite well with Lamb and Jones.

BUT they still do not alleviate the pain some felt and still feeling on HOW Royce embarrassed the Rockets organization, the fan base, and Morey on a national level.

It wouldn't be as bad if we had drafted Fab Melo and went straight bust. In the end, not only Royce is a bust and adding insult to injury, we had to lose a second round Euro stash AND more cash just to get rid off our seemingly never ending nightmare/hemorrhoid.

He straight out conned us! It's a tough pill to swallow and will take time to heal.

Marcus Morris and Dmo over Kawhi Leonard (I think Chandler is better than him though) and Faried

Faried is nothing special. Morris over Leonard/Vucevic was bad

Didn't answer because the poll question is loaded. Jones was a fantastic pick, and White was a good risk to take.
