What about hunting and fishing? Two of my biggest hobbies. Aren't those sports? I'll post again for the idiots. sport –noun 1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc. 2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors. 3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime. 4. jest; fun; mirth; pleasantry: What he said in sport was taken seriously. 5. mockery; ridicule; derision: They made sport of him. 6. an object of derision; laughingstock. 7. something treated lightly or tossed about like a plaything. 8. something or someone subject to the whims or vicissitudes of fate, circumstances, etc. 9. a sportsman. 10. Informal. a person who behaves in a sportsmanlike, fair, or admirable manner; an accommodating person: He was a sport and took his defeat well. 11. Informal. a person who is interested in sports as an occasion for gambling; gambler. 12. Informal. a flashy person; one who wears showy clothes, affects smart manners, pursues pleasurable pastimes, or the like; a bon vivant. 13. Biology. an organism or part that shows an unusual or singular deviation from the normal or parent type; mutation. 14. Obsolete. amorous dalliance. –adjective 15. of, pertaining to, or used in sports or a particular sport. 16. suitable for outdoor or informal wear: sport clothes. –verb (used without object) 17. to amuse oneself with some pleasant pastime or recreation. 18. to play, frolic, or gambol, as a child or an animal. 19. to engage in some open-air or athletic pastime or sport. 20. to trifle or treat lightly: to sport with another's emotions. 21. to mock, scoff, or tease: to sport at suburban life. 22. Botany. to mutate. –verb (used with object) 23. to pass (time) in amusement or sport. 24. to spend or squander lightly or recklessly (often fol. by away). 25. Informal. to wear, display, carry, etc., esp. with ostentation; show off: to sport a new mink coat. 26. Archaic. to amuse (esp. oneself).
i do a lot of fishing too... it's not a sport. and shooting a deer you've trained to feed at a specific spot for months is absolutely NOT a sport. they should call it shooting. no need for name calling because others don't agree with your opinion.
Moron, we're not looking for facts. Opinions only here. Douchebag. Go read your dictionary. Doodie eater. Golf is not a sport. The board is nearly unanimous. Dingleberry.
uhhhh golf is clearly a sport? if everyone here grew up playing golf, I doubt this debate would even be happening. its almost like class, wealth, location, education etc. impact how people feel about things.
1) I learned how to play golf when I was 5 years old. 2) I played regularly through high school. 3) I literally had a golf course that was attached to my back yard for 6 years while growing up. I mowed over golf balls on a regular basis 4) We used to shoot golf carts with sling shots while people were swinging from my bedroom window. 5) Anything done while drinking beer isn't a sport. Except croquet and washers and kuub and ping pong.
I would say ping pong is more of a sport than golf. The pros are probably better athletes than most golfers. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Cy1uHLjMESY&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Cy1uHLjMESY&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
Yes, one of the definitions for sport could be an active pastime or recreation. I consider golf an active pastime or recration. There's a difference between sport and athletics.
I know you werent being serious with your whole post but the point is taken. 1) i have never drank beer while playing golf. maybe i am just a purist 2) ... yikes i gotta go but i am finishing this brilliant post when i get back tonight
Golf is by far (and not even close) the most difficult in terms of skill. That doesn't mean it's a sport though.
You must be one of those liberal yuppies. Hunting and fishing is a sport. That's a non-debatable fact. Some of you are caught up in the notion that a "sport" is something where a ball is used and you're trying to beat someone on the scoreboard. Move along now.
what DON'T you consider a sport? if fishing is a sport then surely you consider using a computer, watching TV, eating etc... sports
It's all personal feelings (with a few exceptions such as hunting and fishing, those aren't even debatable) Eating can be a sport. Ask Kobayashi if he thinks eating hot dogs is a sport. Watching a TV? Using a computer? It depends on your personal definition, although not necessarily a sport.
thank you for proving my point... now stop calling people names because they dont consider what you do a sport.
