Yes, how dare anyone compare any other group in human history to black people. Blacks went through the ultimate suffering, and deserves to be treated better than everyone else and be free to make fun of white people and asians.

Let's say you're watching a full-blown, all-out hardcore porno starring Scarlett Johansson getting busy with Brad Pitt. If it's Brad Pitt giving you a boner, you're gay. There is no choice in the matter. I kept having to rewind parts of Lost in Translation because every time Scarlett Johansson was on the screen, my mind would go in the toilet staring at her and I wouldn't be paying any attention to the movie itself because all I could think about was raunchy sex with Scarlett effing Johansson.

As to the rest, I'm all for people being happy and in love, so gay folks should be allowed to marry. The gays aren't going to come steal away the licenses and solemn vows of any straight married people.

Summed up: if it ain't my dick it ain't my business.

And check this out: My maternal grandparents were married for around 60 years. They had 4 children. Those 4 children produced 4 total grandchildren who are now 44, 40, 35 (<--me), and 23. Out of 8 people total, there have been 8 marriages and 6 divorces, and not ONE of those marriages or divorces occurred with any of us grandkids. All of us are still single and all of us are still childless, mostly because our parents were all such terrible role models that we all have commitment issues coming out of our ears as a result. The ONE lasting relationship out of all of us grandkids is my lesbian cousin, who has been with her partner for ~20 years. A generation of my family are commitment-phobic and the ONE lasting, loving couple isn't allowed to get married.

Don't you think that's kind of effed up?

    I do.

I'm impressed with this post and applaud your attitude for separating your religious beliefs from how you see society should operate as a whole. You are certainly well within your rights to think what you will about homosexuality but I am glad to see that you recognize as a society we shouldn't discriminate.

I don't know what accept means. But everyone, everywhere should be afforded dignity and respect.

If you're looking at this through the prism of Christian faith, I believe you have to start with the whole "we're all created in the image of God" and "God so loved the world..." and the whole "second greatest commandment is to love others as much as you love yourself" thing-a-ma-do. I don't see Jesus putting conditions on who is to be afforded love, dignity and respect. He seemed to be the first to point out that the minute you start to point fingers at someone else is the minute you should wake up to realize you're entirely imperfect.

Actually, there is no separation between my Christian beliefs and my views of society. Love and equal treatment for all people regardless of who they are is not only compatible with Christianity, it is a commandment and central to the teachings of Jesus Christ. The bible teaches that homosexuality is sin, but so is lying, adultery, cheating and drunkenness. It doesn't command us to judge and condemn people who do these things, it teaches us to show them God's love so that they can come to Him. I would never equivocate about my disapproval of a homosexual lifestyle, but there is no place for a holier-than-thou stand either -- every Christian was a sinner saved by grace. Christians who judge homosexuals and mistreat them are in disobedience to the bible.

Maybe historically, black people have endured much worse than gays but discrimination is discrimination. You would rather wait for something really bad to happen in order to justify fair treatment to that specific group?

I don't believe it's a "choice" so I have no problems with it. Seems kind of weird even having to clarify that, actually.

As far as gay marriage goes, I say this in every "gay" thread, but I think straight people with kids getting divorced is ultimately WAY more destructive to society than gay people getting married.

and even if he didn't its still a pretty ridiculous comparison.

I think I should let RR speak for himself, but everyone should have equal rights, I don't think that' what RR is challenging. I think he is challenging the notion that blacks and gays have gone through the same experience of discrimination.
