In my thirteen years of public education I don't remember once hearing anything about the accomplishments of Native Americans, and I certainly had no idea that there was a Native American History Month. The closest thing we got was the racist depiction of "Indians" the few days before Thanksgiving.
I disagree with you here. I don't think that you and I are fundamentally different because we have different skin color. To me color blindness is not admitting that we cannot tolerate differences, but rather realizing that the difference is insignificant. Hopefully there will come a day when we care as much about skin color as we do about hair or eye color.
Just off of the top of my: Buffalo soldiers, Black cowboys, Black frontier towns, Dr. Charles Drew, Dr. Percy Julian, Tuskegee Airman, 62nd Regiment, Master Chief Carl Brashear, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, James Baldwin, The Harlem Rennaissance and so on. As I said Black History is more than just civil rights, Jazz and R & B. If you need me to elaborate then you really need Black History Month.
The problem is that there are others that may have even greater impact on the entire planets populace that get left out because they are not black, and there is not enough time to learn about them.... I prefer a complete meritocracy....... DD
there is a subject for that called world history. black history specifically focuses on american history. I don't see the problem. the issue of it creates antagonism, I find that people who get upset about things like black history month are looking for a reason to dislike black people.
That is the problem . . . who decides what 'Merits' mention Throughout history White men have decided and through out history . . . they decided white men merited more mention This is why such months are necessary It is easy for you to say Meritocracy . . .when you come from the position of the group that has ALWAYS had it THEIR way . . . . Rocket River
I would prefer a meritocracy too but if we as a society were capable of that we wouldn't have had racism in the first place. I don't agree with the idea that we can't focus on somethings because we will lose out on others. While its true we can't learn everything I personally feel we've dumbed down a lot of our education system and we could still teach someone about Julian Percy and still learn about Albert Einstein. No one is saying we only teach Black History to the exclusion of other history.
I think white people are just upset because there is no "white history" month. Here's my theory, there are no "white" restaurants. There is always a food group to associate with cultural celebration (soul food, mexican, chinese, etc.). Get a cuisine, get a month. BTW Isn't Presidents Day a "celebrate the white man" day? Your energy may be better spent in your concern as to why nobody gives a crap about it. When is it anyway?
i hope this doesnt offend.....but why do the entertainment industries and government always remind us of 9/11? i mean sheesh its been almost 6 years. MOVE ON! its like political propaganda or something.
Yeah, because Italian, French, German, and English cuisine doesn't exist. For the record...what would people say if I wrote this? BTW Isn't Martin Luther King Day a "celebrate the black man" day? Your energy my be better spent in your concern as to why nobody gives a crap about it. When is it anyway?" My guess is that I would be labeled a racist and a bigot. I care as much about MLK day as you do about Presidents Day. Just another day off.
Oh I get it. Everyone who doesn't agree with you is a racist! Three cheers for open-mindedness! I'll state it again. Every class I've ever taken has taken extreme pains to emphasize the achievements of non-whites and their contributions to society throughout the class.
he's saying that black history month can cause friction between blacks and non whites. so I'm addressing the people who may actually get upset with black people. not just people upset with the class.
Can you recommend any good English restaurants? Sounds tasty! Check your threadstarter, he obviously doesn't give a crap about BHM, my guess is that you're labeling him a racist and a bigot...pretty bold statement. HAPPY PRESIDENT'S DAY!
Wouldn't be racist but except for a couple of comments in here, from what I've heard from other people, my classes are the norm. In my opinion, people are scared of being accused of racism so they go out of their way to include non-whites into their classes.
the problem with the assumption that BLACK HISTORY MONTH CAUSE FRICTION is *sigh* . . I'll say it. . those having friction with it are majority white and the friction is that it is a month where white folx are not the primary focus If you move black history into 'mainstream' history is can ONCE AGAIN find it *rightful* place as a secondary history Anytime something is FOR a minority . .the Major SCREAM about how it is seperatist This is not unlike when I was at Texas A&M Uni. 20~30 black folx sat together in the lunch room White folx would ask. . . WHY DO YOU SEGREGATE YOURSELVES?? We asked. . .How come we segregating ourselves . . when it is only 20~30 of us BUT You don't think you are segregating yourselves When over 2000 of you are all sitting with Only white people? Perhaps it is about Perspective? Rocket River
I care about it, I am just wondering why we need it. I care about people and their accomplishments and think that it should all be taught, as should integration and the impact that the wonderful Dr. Martin Luther King had on ending segregation. I just wonder - out loud - whether having a "Black history" month actually detracts from the overall goal of having everyone looked at as equals. And for the record, I am 3/4s white and 1/4 American Indian. This thread is not meant to do anything than see how people feel about BHM as a whole and whether it is needed. DD
