We do have a Asian Heritage Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. Did yall not know that? Blacks aren't the only race with a month dedicated to their accomplishments. We got days that celebrate individuals, so I don't see anything wrong with celebrating an entire race's accomplishments or culture.

White people don't get a month because we're living in a white man's world. :D

They already integrate it into schools in the normal american history class. And if black history needs its own month as you believe, why doesnt hispanic history or native American history. They already include al aspects of history in school form each race's viewpoints.

It is not studied nearly as much. Yes it is discussed but not in great depth as others.

They do have their own months and there are 3-4 posts that state this already. Hispanic Heritage Month is in September and Native American is in November.

While I tend to agree with this statement, I guess the problem would be that a lot of the accomplisments would get washed away by greater accomplishments in regards to history.

And there is only so much time in school.

Ones race is an integral part of them. . .like ones gender
generally .. .you can change gender before you can change race
it should not IMO be a footnote

    I am a Black Man . . .
I am not just a MAN

The point of equality is not that my Race becomes invisible
it is that it is not the defining point in which one treats me

Race invisibility is an insult and imo stupid
Everyone should be proud of who they are and where they come from
Colorblindness is just a short cut
it is almost like admitting that we cannot tolerate differences
so we must eliminate all differences. . . or ignore them

    Is that true?

    Rocket River
Equality means treat people the same . .dispite differences
    not ignoring the differences completely

You say this as if it just magically happened and will always be there.

The main reason I think having Black History month is good is because Black History in America is a huge part of American history and the people who managed to overcome those circumstances and still contribute and make a difference deserve special merit.

The accomplishments of the individuals is magnified when taken in the context of "Black History" in America.

Ironically your post helps to make the case for Black History month as you bring up civil rights, Jazz and R & B as being substitutes for Black History. Those things are impotant to Black History but there is a lot more to it than that.

I graduated from high school in 98 and have went to college since then. In both scenarios African-American history and the people involved in it were discussed, yes, but not to any great magnitude like the counterpart.

Sorry to tell you but as a 2003 high school grad and a 2006 college grad, I can tell you that it's all taught at all times of the year with an EMPHASIS given to the roles that non-whites have played in our history.

I think some of you just grew up in a different time and your perspective on what is and what is not taught in schools is warped. It's not anything bad or an indictment of any kind just a statement that even though you're not old, you have a different perspective on what is and what isn't taught and that perspective may not be in line with the current reality.

Maybe they teach the subjects and individuals in some places and not in others.

That's what I am saying. Don't focus on his race. Where do I advocate making it invisable. Just advocate focusing on what the man did, not his color.

Does having a certain month for it keep it from being fully integrated into the curriculum? For instance, if a teacher knows they have to fill a months worth of classes dealing with black history are they going to avoid talking about those subjects in the rest of the year so they will have enough to fill that month?

Really now, because as a 2004 high school grad and a current college student I have yet to see a class where black history is fully intergrated. Could it be that you think its more intergrated because you aren't black and therefore don't realize how little black history is taught?

My high school classes touched on black history during Feb and that was in and in my college histiory classes so far all I've heard is that, news flash, black people were slaves and MLK led the revolution. Thats about it.

It is easy to say get rid of it .. and THEN try to impliment it
then BOOM it never happens and what is lost .. is lost

I say integrate it. . then we will look into disolving the month

    Honestly
    I like Black History month
    I like July 4th
    I like Cinco De Maio
    I like JuneTeenth
would we roll them all up into one independence day
