Hopefully this deep bench doesn't last much longer. There isn't much point having good players in the 10-15 slots. I can't fathom the season starting before Morey has a chance to cash in his chips.

This line up will beat the Rockets' starting five last season, and that includes the end of the season starting unit. They could go to the playoffs.

    And then you woke up.

I mean really? Are you kidding me?

Having a great bench means you have a guy to back up every major position - a solid big man, a small forward/guard, and a point guard / guard. Through in maybe another guy and that's it. 9 players is more than enough to do your damage for the regular season.

Afterall, you can only play 5 guys at a time. Only 5 players play at once. Having a good 10th bench player is a total waste unless you have an injury. Because then he's competing with not just the starter for minutes, but another bench player ahead of him.

You figure your starters can give you 25-35 minutes each. That leaves 13-23 minutes for the bench at each position.. Or....65-115 minutes for the entire bench. If you give your average bench player 20-25 minutes that's another 3 or 4 players, plus you have to leave room for the rest of the guys to keep them fresh and happy a bit. You have to give the end of the bench about 20-25 minutes... The guys who need to break a sweat, or rookies / developmental players.

Having 5 capable starters after your initial starters is going to create problems because the bench players will feel they aren't getting enough minutes and the starter will feel that if they make any kind of mistake they get benched for someone else that game. YOu don't want 5 bench players who all need 30 minutes - that's going to be disasterous.

    It doesn't work.

I find it hard to believe that the "injury" snake bite isn't more blatantly part of the analysis here.

It's only lasted how many seasons now??

Believe me, Owner, GM, and Coach are all on the same page in this regard. Sure DM is collecting assets. But he is also trying to avoid the ups and downs that come from injuries leaving a hole or holes in your team. Everyone now understands the team's vulnerability if Lowry goes down. This is why Morey said they are also now looking for a third PG. None of the "big 3" want a repeat of past years in this regard. Plain and simple. Don't we all have a nagging fear, somewhere deep down, that it could happen again? I shudder when I think of it. So do Alexander, Adelman and DM. Having good backup at every position is prudent planning.
