I don't think this is at all true. If a QB is the highest rated player on the board when it comes to Indy's pick, they shouldn't pick the QB, for example. Need always matters.
Teams always say this but never do it. It's always BPA in a position of need. For example if you have Adrian Peterson you don't take a RB with your top pick.
i get this feeling that if it was a 3-21 deficit and matt left the game in the kickers hands to tie it you would be very chipper about the performance the qb had.. whats that oh stats are nice, but.... BUT.... regardless kicker left 9 points on the field. seems his "lesser teammates" let him down.. i guess that only matters when you defend matt..
Everyone seems to thinks it Bridgewater, Mariota, Clowney in that order, so the Texans will be on the outside looking in, probably drafting at 4th.
QB is the exception, not the rule, because it's the only position where you can't truly develop a backup. And given that the Texans don't have a franchise QB, I'm quite certain this is immaterial for us. Personally, I would go for the QB with the caveat of said QB having franchise potential. And by that I don't mean Manning/Rodgers level. But someone you can project to be a Vick/Rothesliberger/Rivers type at least. Otherwise I'd take BPA but make sure to take a flyer on a QB in the mid rounds(2~4).
I agree, if only we played bad teams throughout all of Keenum's games. However, we've played KC, Indy and Arizona: all three of which have above .500 records. And in all three of those games, Keenum played well. If Keenum does well throughout the rest of the season, I think he is the answer at QB.
To me it all depends on who is available and where you are picking. If we are picking 4th, then we are probably not taking a QB in the first round. Mariotta and Bridgewater will be gone and no one else is good enough to take that high. I don't think it will matter. I think the Texans manage to get themselves to 6 wins and basically take themselves out of the best players on the board. We'll then hear about they finished strong and Kubiak gets to keep his job because everyone kept fighting for him.
He played decent, but had a chance at a game winning drive in all three games and failed at all of them. You can't teach winning. I like Keenum and the Texans should keep him, but if you are in a spot to get a top 3 or 4 QB in the draft this year, you get one.
Peyton Manning and Drew Brees had their fair share of late game troubles early on. Pete Prisco also noted that Keenum has a very good arm.
Texans are still in the hunt for the number three overall pick. http://espn.go.com/nfl/standings/_/group/1 I know the odds of losing to the Jags are slim, but maybe the curse can last for a few more games. And if the Texans do select third, that means either Clowney or Mariota are still on the board.
I'd go offensive line or defensive line with the 1st round pick. Then a LB. If we add another high quality, young d-lineman pass rusher, we could be set for 10 years with a solid pass rush. Right now Watt is getting double teamed but we're not taking advantage of it. and yeah our O-line has major problems on the right side.
I could talk myself into liking this pick. http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/73943/am-ot-matthews-quietly-gets-it-done
You've utterly confused me... why are you flipping the scenario? If the *exact* thing had happened with Matt (ie build a 21-3 lead, watch the kicker miss FGs and lose), would I defend Schaub? Last year, earlier this year... probably. I'm just tired of the whole enterprise. Tired of this regime, tired of this team... Keenum has been an immediate upgrade but, frankly, I'm much more concerned about his long-term viability. If the Texans are going to wind up with a high draft pick, in a suppossedly QB-rich draft class, they *cannot* head into April unsure of their degree of need. So, yeah - I'm probably holding Keenum to a higher standard because we need to definitively know what we have.
There are no elite quarterbacks in this draft. Zero! Best prospect is Mariota, and history tells us that Quarterbacks from that school are garbage via NFL.
WOW ..... Laurence Holmes on 670 the Score in Chicago just compared Case Keenum to Blaine Gabbert and called Case "awful"....... unreal.
