I also agree with your last point. QB is not a priority compared to other positions, but the question is do the Texans need more insurance for Schaub than Yates, so my answer is still yes.
Yates proved himself, see the game against falcons, see the game against the bengals to clinch the division, see the 1st playoff game. how is he still a rookie? with 6 regular season games and 2 playoff games with a full training camp, he could be a great backup.
who was debating that? and i guarantee you that those people aren't the same ones who are debating whether he's worthy of being a backup. only way i could imagine that any sane person was debating that last year, would have been under the hypothetical terms of "who starts next year if tj yates wins us the super bowl this year?"
Upgrading Yates costs money - which current starter would you like to jettison to make room for a QB who, if all goes well, will never take a snap next year?
