I don't think so, even if they are Muslims. Sorry ATW. Maybe Exiled can chip in.

When I say "Kings" I mean Emirs, Princes, Royals etc. and I don't mean strictly ceremonial positions say like the Queen? I think of Holland.

So why do they have them?

I would say historically a couple of generations ago, the people might have been fairly content with these hereditary leaders/dictators, but in the twentieth century the main reason has been that some like the King of Saudi Arabia, and the similar figures in places like Bahrain and Kuwait have been useful to the West in controlling their oil supply.

I base this on historical evidence like the overthrow of Mossadegh in Iran, the hysteria when Sadam Hussein went into Kuwait while we are aiding the Saudis in Yemen etc. Of course the Arab Spring shows that many of the people do not like to be ruled by dictators, so why would they want to be ruled by dictators even if called a 'King" "Emir" etc.

I also base this on a personal story told to me by my brother in law who after a career in the US military used to train Saudi troops as a contractor. He told me that in a number of occasions when soldiers trusted him enough they told him that hated the King having all the money and privileges. His belief was that our troops are there to keep the Saudi Army from overthrowing the Royals.

I'm glad you have good research based on ONE STORY and ONE POLITICAL movement.

Why don't you ask "most people in the 'Middle East'" the questions you have?

Come back later when you have your research, man. Thanks.

No offense man, but before proposing a topic for discussion, at least have some substance ready and perhaps write at least one proper sentence in your title or OP. Because I honestly don't want to spend effort trying to decipher what you're trying to say.

The Middle East is a big and diverse area. However there is still a strong culture in many ways respect and believe in authoritarian rule be it from a dictator, royalty or a religious figure.

BUT WE WANT KINGS THERE . . . so we don't give a f*** what they want

If they were democratically elected officials then the number of people we would have to bribe and pay off would get expensive . . . .. .

The Maloofs no longer wanted Kings.

I'd say it's a safe extrapolation to the entire mideast.

    Also safe: Indians love Kings.

Me neither.:( I spotted it as soon as I returned to work and see if there were any responses. I think we should be able to edit thread titles.

Well if there is anything worse than a double negative it is the inability to understand things in context.

I'm kinda down with maintaining the remaining kings until we sort out the complete cluster**** that resulted when the last batch was removed.

Yeah, I am too. This goes for dictators who I don't view as functionally much different than Kings. This might be the real reason why some of the folks there tolerate kings. It is certainly the reason why the vast majority of Iraqis did not want us to come in bomb the crap out of the country and overthrow Sadam, even though he was widely hated.

Noone can answer this question because the Middle East is a big place with many different nations and cultures and histories and traditions. An Iranian and an Yemenian(sp?) have nothing in common.

The most important thing to note is, you would never know because they can't say it without risking their lives.

You live there, I believe. What is your opinion? It was pretty widely known before the Soviet Union that not too many people actually believed in Leninism. They just kept their mouths shut to not get in trouble. I think with the Arab Spring and Bahrain and even some brief demos in Saudi Arabia that that it is fairly clear.

go along to get along. Sort of like what a lot of folks have to do in their jobs here.
