Hey, I was just responding to what I believe to be the proper etiquette. The only penalty is you would kind of look like a dick and I'd say it gives the other person the right to bring out all the stops, ie, "who are you to talk, you were you too stupid to get into that school anyway", etc. Which may or may not be the case depending on the situation...just an example. I'm just saying you better be prepared for that before you start talking smack.

I'm a big Duke basketball fan, but have absolutely no connection to the school other than I really liked a lot of their players when I was in junior high and it's just kind of carried over. I definitely enjoy it when Duke kills Maryland in basketball because I really can't stand their fans, yet I don't rub it in to my ex-Terp buddies out of respect. Honestly, they went to the school and lived and died with the team for four years, paid thousands of dollars in tuition, participated in the traditions, etc. I watched Duke play from a thousand miles away on a TV screen. Just doesn't feel right to "rub it in." But maybe I'm just too nice.

I personally find this to the most logical. Mainly because I have a hard time thinking any school team that's not my alma mater as MY team. I mean, I'll forever root for UH and Rice because I live in Houston. And I'll cheer on UT or A&M if I happen to catch them play on TV. But they're not my teams.

I was a fan of this as a kid:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OZ13fobOmuM&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OZ13fobOmuM&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I didn't go to UH but it left its mark on me. I'm still a fan. :)

There is a new argument brewing......

I witnessed a UH (main campus) alum call a UH - Clear Lake alum a T-shirt fan. True story. He even noted that the two schools have a different mascots. The clear lake campus is the gator? I think?

I've said before I don't care what your connections are, root for whomever.

But I do think it's lame to talk trash after a win when you admit you haven't been following the team much until now, when they've finally had success. That does sound like a bandwagon fan, even if you have the connections.

UHCL's "official" mascot is the Egret..and our unofficial mascot is "Blockie" which is just a cube with a face,

I went to UH main campus in the late 80's and early 90's (but didn't graduate) and go to UHCL now. But I have rooted for the Coogs all these years. I went to 3 home games during the 0-11 2001 season..which almost NONE of the students can claim...so I reserve my right to be a Coog for as long as I wanna be...so there :p

You know what, if you can't make the god-danged half-hour drive up 45 North to give us a half-decent enrollment figure and alumni support, than yeah, you are a front-runner.
