Leave it to Jeff to make a logical argument for why I am still soooo Damn attached to my 70's and 80's music... I'm weird in that I still value my vinyl very highly...but I aint afraid of the new technologies. Anything that makes it easier to listen to music anywhere I go is all good for me! That being said, I still think that vinyl sounds more "alive" than CD's do....there is just something about it...
The '70's did have some great music, but it will always be overshadowed by Disco. The pallor and stench brought on the nation by disco will make it hard to sing the praises of '70's music as a whole. Though Punk came about then, and so did New Wave(as we called it back in the day). But back to the 80's! Look at Rap then, and Rap today. Rap then IMHO kicked a$$ Whoever mentioned Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and The Police in their thread has tapped into the essence that made the '80's beautiful. Kajagoogoo is a testimony to... something, go '80's!
good examples of what I'm talkin about with 70's music: AC/DC Dire Straights Aerosmith Eagles Blue Oyster Cult Frampton Cheap Trick Jefferson Starship Bad Company ELO Black Sabbath Allman Brothers Foreigner Doobie Brothers Hendrix Journey Zeppelin Heart Moody Blues Kiss Pink Floyd Steve Miller Band Queen Lynyrd Skynryd Santana Outlaws Steely Dan Rush Styx Van Halen Iron Maiden Judas Priest .38 Special Molly Hatchet Supertramp Thin Lizzy Alice Cooper Deep Purple Montrose Rainbow man, there are soo many great bands that either started in the 70's or had their biggest years during the 70's... just because disco was the more visible music doesn't make the whole decade bereft of good music...most of these bands directly or indirectly influenced almost 80% of the rock bands that are out today...
Scritti Politti... ah ha! I got you on that one! i think pink floyd is overrated...uh oh here it comes!
Who? Me? I didn't even get into punk bands on that list..that was just Rock/Hard Rock....There were definitely some great punk bands out in the 70's...Clash, Sex Pistols, Black Flag....those were the ones I'm most familiar with...
