DNC Video: "The Government Is The Only Thing We All Belong To"

    If you belong to a church, do they control you? If you belong to a book club, do they control you, or is it for you and about you?

    I understand English perfectly fine and the implication is that we are all wards of the state. What part of "we all belong to" don't you understand?

    And joining a church is a mind-numbingly stupid ass analogy. I have a choice in joining or leaving a church. The only way to leave the government is to move out of the country.

    I do disagree because, as somebody who has been very involved in the political process and system, I can confidently say that it isn't the people that compose the government, but rather influential groups and moneyed interests. We aren't part of the government because people don't really have a say unless they prescribe to the false choices presented by the corporate owned Republican and Democratic parties. To the government, we're property. They only care about keeping us working from paycheck to paycheck to keep the crooked system that keeps them in power running.

    You're interpreting the term "belong" to imply ownership, as in "that item belongs to me". The term "belong" can also mean "be a participating member of", as in "I belong to the Lutheran Church". If I said that, no one would actually think that the Lutheran Church OWNS me, for goodness sake.

    The phrase "The Government Is The Only Thing We All Belong To" is talking about being a part of the government, either by running for office or by being a voting citizen. If you try to interpret the phrase differently, I think it says more about your mindset than the Democratic party.

    The ownership comes from the "all". That makes it mandatory. We can only opt out by leaving the country. The phrase betrays a certain collectivist mindset that's not unlike Communism.

    My goodness, how are we supposed to survive as a nation when this is the mindset of a part of the populace? DUDE, amigo, bud...you honestly think the DNC put out a video saying that everybody is the property of the government. Just out of pure common sense, even if democrats believed that, you think they would put it in a video and release it to the public?

    Nonsense - you only have those choices because you accept the choices presented to you. Have you run your office? Have you gone out and fought for the issues that matter to you? Have you met with your representatives, city council members, etc? All those things are *options* for you - if you choose not to use them, that's fine. But it's not true that don't have more options and are stuck with what is presented to you.

    That's exactly the point. Everyone has different churches and book clubs and whatever else. Government is the only thing we all participate in together.

    OK, when you leave a church are you continuing to stay on their property and wasting space for other potential members? If you don't like the government get out or vote for a change. You can't refuse to contribute and then still continue to reap the benefits of living here.

    Sounds to me you just don't want to pay up.

    They didn't think anyone will call them on it. Certainly state run media at NYT, WaPo, CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS, and NPR won't. So, they figure they can get away with it.

    :confused: It wasn't an analogy - it was directly from the video. In case you actually didn't watch it, the video compares belonging to different churches to all belonging to one government.

    Do you just make stuff up to fit whatever you want to believe?

    It confuses the crap out of me and at the same time makes me sad at how dense people can be. Democrats made a video about how people belong to the government, and they did so just...well just because. They figured "hey nobody is gonna figure out what we really mean lol". If you really believe this, you are stupid, no other way to say it.

    There's nothing wrong with the video. As major already pointed out, saying the government is something we belong to is not the same as saying we are the property of the government. The ad clearly means that, regardless of our differing religious or cultural affiliations, we all have a part in shaping our government.

    So your idea of reasonable political discourse is to demean both an entire political party/affiliation and people with developmental disabilities?

    You're right: you don't belong to the government of the United States. The government of the United States is better than you deserve.

    The government is not (possibly) inherently evil, but human history is over saturated with examples of why government power is something that should only be given with extreme scrutiny and reluctance by the people. Amazingly, it seems as if a good portion of Americans have forgotten this lesson. People like to say the founding fathers support "their" side. Really, it's safe to say that the founding fathers were simply afraid of corruption. If government power isn't inherently evil, it is inherently risky. The lobbying and super pacs are part of the reason.
