Ticket = Gone to VooDooPope But I might have another tomorrow . . . Warehouse Preferred Lawn . . . whatever that means . . .
Graham Colton Band is opening for them on the Texas dates. I actually happen to like them a lot, and have seen them 4 times now in concert. I'd be interested to hear what people think of them- they are from the Dallas area, actually. I went to the San Antonio show. Not my favorite show, but definitely a good show. I totally loved Bartender, Stay, and Lie in Our Graves. Once again, just like when I last saw the band in H-town, the lightning show in the distant clouds provided an amazing backdrop to the music. Good show, but when a band has SO MANY albums, and is so willing to play any of their material, it's unlikely to hear all of your favorite songs. But that's also what makes the shows so unique, and worthwhile to see two or three shows in a row. Oh, by the way, I really dug 2 or 3 of the new songs, although I can't remember them by name.
DMB show electrifies crowd The band treated fans to an array of treasured hits By MICHAEL D. CLARK Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle Fear not, you Phish fans who are mourning your favorite noodle band, which disbanded last week. If you're searching for another crack, improvisatory rock group that specializes in two hour-plus sets and unexpected song selections, the Dave Matthews Band is here for you. Friday at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Matthews and Co. hosted the opening performance of what has become a nearly-annual trip to The Woodlands. They're apparently in no danger of playing this market too often: Friday's performance was a sell-out that swelled with approximately 17,000 sweaty fans and Saturday's show is sold out as well. In the Houston area, the DMB's following is far superior to Phish's or any other touring band touched by the Grateful Dead. Fans keep coming for a rock 'n' roll attitude with a big-band aptitude that can't be rivaled. They come because Matthews is the most unself-conscious sex symbol in all of music. Mostly, however, they keep coming because they never see the same show twice. In 11 years, the DMB put out five studio albums (not including Matthews' solo album, Some Devil, which was released last year) that simply served as templates for its live jams. The band's place is clearly on the stage, not in the studio, as evidenced by the release of eight concert albums in the same amount of time. The band's set lists are studied and scrutinized by fans, and in recent years local Davidites have been blessed with some of the group's most eclectic offerings. In addition to playing multiple-night stands when possible (with hardly a song repeated ), the band delivers performances well more than two hours long. Ninety minutes into what was scheduled as a two-and-a-half hour concert, the DMB appeared to be sticking to that plan. Matthews took the stage with only an acoustic guitar, but the response to his presence was plenty electric. On a large stage rigged with dozens of dancing spotlights in ever-changing colors, Matthews and his band, drummer Carter Beauford, saxophonist LeRoi Moore, bassist Stefan Lessard and violinist Boyd Tinsley, opened with the staccato horn blast Tripping Billies. After winding through the vocals, Matthews and Tinsley stood face-to-face at center stage riffing on the melody as if they could read each other's minds. It was one of three early hits that included Ants Marching and Warehouse. An early night highlight was a soft, acoustic version of Grace Is Gone, which began with Matthews singing in a falsetto that Art Garfunkel couldn't have delivered better. When the World Ends, a highlight of 2001's Everyday was revved up into a Tom Petty-Style rocker with extended spotlights for nearly every band member. Two songs that DMB loyalists will chirp about on Internet chat rooms today are the aptly titled Joy Ride and the nearly acoustic Hello Again. Neither song has been properly released on a studio album, which makes them the shiniest diamonds in band's treasure chest ... for the moment.
I realized that was you RIGHT AFTER I got to my seat. I was so worried I was going to be late that I wasn't really thinking. Then I looked for you afterwards but missed you. Sorry about that! I was telling VooDooPope "Damn, I saw RM95, but I didn't realize it was him at first". Where did you sit? Last night's show: Tripping Billies Granny Joy Ride Hello Again Grace Is Gone When The World Ends Drive In Drive Out Warehouse Lover Lay Down Song That Jane Likes Sugar Will Ants Marching Typical Situation Crazy Easy Grey Street __________________ Best of Whats Around All Along The Watchtower Highlights: Tripping Billies as an Opener was really neat. Joy Ride and Hello Again were awesome. Joy Ride was better than SA, but Hello Again was better there. Grace is Gone was FANTASTIC. That was a really awesome jam there at the end. Warehouse was really neat -- I was hoping to see that one at least once this tour. Lover Lay Down was a neat surprise (3rd time this tour). STJL was also VERY cool, and full of energy. Ants was great, and IMO, Typical Situation was the 2nd best song of the night (BOWA is 1, but just because it's my fave song). They REALLY jammed this one -- the best I've ever heard. Dave screwed up at the beginning, and for some reason I feel like that made it better. It was funny -- the crowd sung along with the song, and seemed to have a better command of it than Dave. Crazy Easy is my least favorite of the new songs, but it'll grow on me. Grey Street was great, but I couldn't believe that was the last song. The show felt short. I was expecting three or four more songs, but hey, they've got one more night here. The Encore was amazing. Eight shows, and I finally saw my favorite song -- Best of What's Around. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll play it again tonight. Then a HIGH ENERGY Watchtower to close it out. Stefan's intros are really great. Butch and Leroi had a really neat jam at the end, and it ended leaving everyone wanting more. Good thing they're coming back today. I have a really good feeling that tonight's show is going to be very special. I think this one will be a long show with at least one of #41 and Two Step, and maybe both. They haven't played Two Step but three times this tour, and another one is due. BTW, I think Houston has some of the best DMB fans around. The best in Texas, no doubt. I've been to Dallas a few times and SA a few times, and Houston's fans just blow the others away. Will look for you at the show today RM95 -- I'll be on the lawn.
Best one yet! Typical Situation was priceless!!!! I want to be buried between Dave and Carter (they'll be buried together right?) I even asked my wife if that was Ok, and she said, "Sure, Honey...she's the best". Don't miss tonight's show if you happen upon a fart in the wind's chance of making it! I knew I was among BBS friends - it was pretty d@mn cool!
Vengeance, I'm on the lawn too, so I'll look for you in the preferred seating, even though I'm not there. I was about three rows in front of you (looked for you in front of me occasionally, saw you behind us about half way through the show...in the high afterwards, I forgot to come by!)...row Y, seats right on the aisle, so it was pretty much center. IMO, subpar setlist, but an amazing show with energy. Warehouse, BOWA, Watchtower and Typical Situation were highlights. Wish I could've met VooDooPope.
Okay, well, it happened again -- plans and backup plans and backups to backups and blah blah blah, I have a free ticket for tonight. For whomever wants it: email: sigemund@postmark.net AIM: Sigemund It's all yours to whomever wants it. It's WH Preferred Lawn. I'll leave it for you at the Mall-side Customer Service Window.
Topping this one last time -- if no takers in the next 10 mins, I'll just give it away to someone up there.
Awesome Show!!! I had the priveledge of sitting next to RM95 for all my questions about the show.... Really powerful..... great performance! The best out of the 5 I have seen by far.
Fantastic show. GREAT setlist. Personally, I think the night before was better though. Probably a lot of that has to do with my seat. I think last night had a MUCH better setlist, but the previous night had better energy. If you could've taken last night's setlist and put it on the first night, it would've been the best show I've been to. They were all filled up at the Warehouse preferred lawn section, so I went up to the very top of the lawn -- I'd always wanted to see a show from up there, and I figured now's the time. That did not bode well. At first, I was in an area where people were just talking, and not listening to the music at all. So then I moved. Same thing. But around song 6, I found a decent spot where I could hear the music pretty well, and the view was alright. Don’t Drink the Water Don’t Burn The Pig The Stone Sugar Will One Sweet World #41 Joy Ride I Did It Rhyme & Reason Bartender Where Are You Going Hello Again Jimi Thing Crazy Easy Too Much __________________ Everyday Last night's show felt very mellow. DAMN the setlist was good. Getting to see Pig and The Stone was awesome. Sugar Will was very neat, and it's really growing on me. #41 was a neat change, although I thought it was a bit short. But this was during my moving locations time, so I likely missed some of it. Joy Ride was INCREDIBLE. That's my favorite new song. It was Hello Again, but after more listens, Joy Ride is just freaking awesome. I had two completely random people ask me what album it's on, and what's it called, etc. Rhyme and Reason was VERY good, as was Bartender. Leroi's pennywhistle outro was fantastic. Hello Again was another highlight. I just love that song. Especially Carter's little solo in the middle. He always does something different, and it's always amazing. Jimi Thing was THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT. W O W WOW . . . WOW WOW WOW. IMO, just a TINY bit under the one from Central Park last year. The song was great, then the "Stop, what's that sound" outro was just amazing. The crowd was singing the "What's that Sound, Everybody look what's going down". It was just the coolest thing. I think that if you had to pick one highlight of DMB in Texas this year, it's this Jimi Thing. I'm still not feeling Crazy Easy, but it'll probably grow on me. Too Much was a great finish. Everyday was 2nd only to Jimi Thing tonight. It kicked ass. The song was just fantastic, but what really made it is the endin, when Dave and Leroi were singing the chorus of two songs at once -- Dave was doing #36 and Leroi was doing Everyday. It was just awesome. Great way to end the Texas tour. But damn, I don't want this to be my last show this year. MUST GET MONEY FOR PLANE TICKET TO SAN FRANCISCO. PAYPAL ACCEPTED
Man, looking back over that setlist, I'm still getting chills about the show last night. I concur with Vengeance about the Jimi Thing. That song highlights everything I love about DMB. The song has spurts of high energy from the guys, mellowness, and Dave being Dave. Joy Ride does the same thing...that song's gonna be one of my favorites. After not hearing a Before These Crowded Streets song the night before, hearing three in a row to start the show off, including my favorite song of all-time (Pig), was amazing. #41 and Bartender were also excellent. I really liked the jam at the end of Hello Again, not to mention a freakin' mid-song solo by Carter! I've heard Rhyme and Reason probably 14 times out of the 17 times I've seen them live. It's never been a favorite of mine, so it was always a 'pee song'. Last night, I decided to embrace it and I was rewarded for it. Awesome energy. I liked the encore a lot, but I was disappointed that it was only one song. When I heard what song it was, I knew it was going to be the last song, so it was kind of a bummer. Vengeance, I wish I had known beforehand that you were going to need a spot. We were near the front of the lawn, getting there when the gates opened. Had I known, we could've saved a spot. I loved the lawn, by the way. I fell on my ass the first second my feet hit the muddy lawn, but I was on a Dave high, so I didn't care. It was awesome watching the lightning in the distance and the rain that escorted us out ended the night perfectly. Not to mention, this is really the first show I've got to watch with a group of friends (and fiancee!). That made the entire experience that much better. What a great freakin' weekend.
Dave Matthews Band Blamed For Human Waste http://cbs2chicago.com/topstories/local_story_237190538.html Aug 24, 2004 6:01 pm US/Central CHICAGO (CBS 2) Rock star Dave Matthews and his tour bus driver are facing a filthy lawsuit. The Illinois Attorney General's office says they're responsible for dumping up to 100-gallons of raw human waste from a tour bus onto the Kinzie Street Bridge earlier this month. The nasty mess rained down on passengers aboard a sightseeing boat two weeks ago. The suit charges both the band and the bus driver with violating state water pollution laws, as well as common law public nuisance laws. A spokesman for the band says all of its tour buses were parked at the time of the incident
if either of you get copies of the show(s) let me know I'd love to have a copy of them (I can hear what I missed at the saturday show). Thanks again Vengeance. Sorry we didn't see you there RM95. Would have been nice to meet you.
I have been a dave mattews fan for a few years now, and I am finally going to go see him this october, looking foward to it a lot. Have heard they are great live, from just about anyone who has seen them live.
I've got the SA show already, and the others are coming down the pipe as we speak. I'm not impressed with the SA show's quality though. Hopefully these others are better. If not, I'll see if I can find a better source/taper.
