    Rockets' Griffin Accused of Assault
    PAM EASTON
    Associated Press

HOUSTON - Suspended Rockets forward Eddie Griffin is being investigated by police, who were told the player beat and shot at a woman at his home.

No warrant had been issued for Griffin's arrest and police haven't found him, police spokesman Alvin Wright said Saturday. Wright said the district attorney's family violence unit will be informed Monday.

Rockets spokesman Dan McKenna said the team was aware of the situation. The team suspended Griffin indefinitely Oct. 16 after he missed practices and a flight.

Griffin's lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said he has not yet spoken with the player. Hardin added he has spoken with others involved in the matter and contends no one was shot at.

Police received a call from a woman before dawn Saturday, saying Griffin assaulted her, Wright said. Griffin later called police to say somebody had broken into his house.

Police arrived and a woman said Griffin had been downstairs talking and "beat the woman up and shot at her," Wright said. He said all police knew about a gun being fired was what the woman told them. The unidentified woman who contends Griffin assaulted her was treated at a hospital, Wright said.

Griffin has an unresolved mar1juana possession charge against him stemming from an April arrest. He averaged 8.7 points and 5.8 rebounds in two seasons with the Rockets.

I am waiting too on the allegations, though Lugo's wife changed her story at the last minute, which is kind of strange. It was rumoured that she changed it so settle their divorce case--though we do not know the real story--only that Lugo was deemed innocent.

But as an employer, Eddie's behavior prior to these allegations cannot happen in my workplace....the obvious lack of respect he is showing for the organization (players to coaches). It has been made pretty clear that he has continuously dissed the coaching staff and players by promising to be accounted for and then not showing without notice or explanation.

It would be different had he called and said, " hey I need a few weeks to sort through some things, can you help me out" We know this did not happen...Therefore, he should be terminated immediately. This is how it works. You no show once without explanation and then drag it out and do it again and again. Third strike and you are out.

This recent incident would not accelerate my decision if I were in the know, because these are allegationsonly. We know the facts about Eddie over the past 2-3 weeks. Dude has zero respect for his teammates and employer. These are grounds enough to can him asap....This has zero to do with race. This is actually about human maturity and respect. He has none for his employer and his teammates.

I feel bad about what is happening today, but this goes on all the time and we have to face the man at the end of the day and we are all held accountable for work and personal life. It sucks and he will get other chances, but time to move on....

Yes, I have the same feeling. Wealth corrupts characters, in particular youngsters whose maturity would hardly be reached with the sudden influx of too much money. Hope EG could learn something in this incident, recognize it is now time to turn back, reform and revert as a significant role player of the Rockets. Good luck, Eddy.

Police investigate alleged shooting at Eddie Griffin's home
    By PEGGY O'HARE
    Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle

Joann Romero, 21, was not hit by the gunfire, but told officers Griffin shot at her twice, police officials said. Griffin has not been charged with any wrongdoing, said Houston Police Department spokesman Alvin Wright. The case will be referred to HPD's family violence unit for further investigation, he said.

Police have not yet spoken with Griffin, and his whereabouts later today were unknown, Wright said. Officers hope to obtain a statement from the athlete, he said.

"She says she will prosecute," Wright said, but added, "no one saw him do it. It's just going to be her word against his."

Romero, of the 9600 block of Maribelle, was taken to Spring Branch Medical Center, where she was treated and released, said hospital spokeswoman Kim Long. A Houston police report states an officer noticed "serious injuries" to Romero's "facial area," Wright said.

Romero told police the assault and gunfire happened at Griffin's two-story, $266,000 home in the 3900 block of Shadow Trace Circle, located in the gated, upscale Shadowlake community off Dairy Ashford Road. She left the house and called police later from another undisclosed location to report the incident, Wright said.

It was not immediately known how much time may have elapsed between the alleged disturbance and Romero's call to police, he said.

After receiving Romero's call at 5:03 a.m. at HPD's Northwest Patrol station, officers went to Griffin's home, where a relative claimed not to have seen the assault and said he didn't know where Griffin was, Wright said. Police supervisors found blood on the driveway and two shell casings in front of the house, Wright said.

A man claiming to be Eddie Griffin called police at 5:28 a.m. to report someone had just broken into the home, Wright said. But officers did not find Griffin at the home, he said.

One of Griffin's next-door neighbors reported he did not hear any gunfire early today, but was awakened in the middle of the night by police officers in his driveway.

Police found Griffin's cousin and another woman at the home in an upscale Houston neighborhood this morning. The cousin told police he hadn't seen or heard anything, Wright said.

The woman at the home, however, told police Griffin had been downstairs talking with a female and had "beat the woman up and shot at her," Wright said.

Wendy Baker, an assistant district attorney who was the acting chief today, said no charges have been presented to the D.A.'s office yet. She said a case number hasn't even been assigned to the matter.

She said she had taken a few calls from police with legal questions, which she said is customary during investigations.

Today's reported incident was news to Griffin's lawyer.

"I know absolutely nothing, " Rusty Hardin said this morning. "I'm trying to find out where everybody is and what is happening. There's really nothing I can tell you."

Rockets spokesman Dan McKenna said the team was aware of the situation but did not have an immediate comment.

Griffin, a two-year veteran out of Seton Hall, was projected as a candidate for the Rockets' starting lineup this year, but has been a problem in pre-season camp. He has been indefinitely suspended "for conduct detrimental to the team."

The suspension began after he skipped a trip to Sacramento. Griffin, 21, the youngest player on the team, then missed a practice and a special workout Friday as part of the process for working his way back from the suspension.

This morning's incident could further complicate the Rockets' decision about Griffin's future since they have to decide by Friday whether to exercise the option on the fourth season of his contract. A decision not to extend the contract beyond its third season would diminish Griffin's trade value.

Griffin started 66 games for the Rockets last year, averaging 8.6 points and 6 rebounds a game. In 2001-2002, after becoming the first rookie to lead Houston in blocks since Hakeem Olajuwon did so during the 1984-85 season, he earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors.

Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said earlier this month that he hoped the time away from the team would allow Griffin to "get himself together."

Griffin has an unresolved mar1juana possession charge against him stemming from an arrest in April. He was the seventh overall pick of the New Jersey Nets in 2001 and was traded to the Rockets for three first-round draft choices.

    AnotherBrother:

IMHO, I think you read too much into REIT's comment. It seems as if you saw something you "wanted" or in fact "didn't want" to see in this line:

"If you're talking about supporting your fellow brother, kumbayah my friend, kumbayah, well sure, aren't we all for that."

Please let me take a stab at it. When he said "fellow brother", I think he meant more along the lines of "fellow man", or "fellow brothers and sisters"....not "fellow brothA" (not being offensive here) as you seem to have misinterpreted from the statement. I think he means that yes, in an ideal and utopian world, we're all for supporting our fellow man (brothers and sisters), but in reality, this is just unfortunately not so.

I hope I'm right on this and that there are no ill feelings. :)

Does this remind anyone else of the whole Vernon Maxwell incident? Hard to know what's going on with all the chaos, but it's becoming increasingly probable that Eddie will never play for the Rockets again.

    Bizarre...

If Eddie ends up not getting arrested, I plead with someone within the Rockets organization to step up and give this kid some help.

Business is business, but the Rockets have always been a class organization who takes care of their own.

    God bless you Eddie Griffin.

Things are what they are, hopefully we'll see you soon.

    Unbelievable.

I always use Kumbayah because that's what I always say when someone preaches love for their fellow man, blah blah blah. As a child, we used to sing that over and over again in elementary school. Perhaps it's ingrained in me.

I should have said fellow man, instead of brother but excuse me if I didn't know that brother, was a prima facie racist term.

Unbelievable. The fact you read that into my post says much more about you than it says about me.

    Racist?

    YOU HAVE ISSUES

why would shell caseings be in FRONT of the house? The neighbors would have heard that, but none did. She made it all up and brought those caseings to the house. I think I know what she was doing. She provoked,or wanted to get punched, that way she can force eddie to "settle" with $$$. Whenever a rich athlete punches someone usually they have to pay alot of $$$ to settle. I bet the girl wanted it so she would be set for life regardless if she retains custody or not.

I think thats why the cops arent looking for Eddie nor a warrant. If there was obvious evidence then Eddie would be hunted down. They probably cant even find bullet holes in the house, because if they did they would have mentianed that in the paper.

Everything will be okay for him. Just will be cut thats all. Braggs/Taylor/Cato will be enough.

It is a little shocking that this went so far... Eddie is surrounded by people from the Rockets organization, he apparently has a lawyer who should have advised him on how to handle himself (assuming this is a custody battle where EG has assumed role of judge and jury), and he is CLEARLY not acting rationally over the past week.

We're not talking about the boy who cried wolf here. EG has been in a lot of trouble lately, so why are the (very professional) people around him letting him go right off the deep end without lifting a finger?

Eddie comes to the Rockets after missing practices and games, says he is extremely upset and can't play basketball, and no one asks him any more questions? They just say, "Go home and sort this out." to a guy who can't seem to manage any facet of his life adequately?

This is not the same thing legally, but it certainly has implications on what I am talking about: In the architecture business, if I walk through a construction site and see dangerous conditions or code violations that I ignore and later result in personal injuries, then I can be sued because I didn't alert anyone to the impending situation. I have had to fire roofers because they were drinking at work. Basically... I know that climbing on a roof while intoxicated is EXTREMELY dangerous, so I was obligated to do something about it.

I think that some people who should have seen this coming were very irresponsible themselves. You don't have to be friends with Eddie to feel the responsibility that every person owes every other person in this world.

    Kumbayah

One has been identified as prima facie racist. Can you identify which one it is?

    Good point

However, you forgot to mention a few things regarding V Maxwell

    - Mad Max could shoot (BBalls) - and was a productive starter
    - 2nd rounder

Now let's compare him to E Griffin

    -Griffin can't shoot ****
-7th pick of the 01 draft - was traded for 3 first round picks

(looking back, if you wanted to trade him back to NJ for R. Jefferson alone - you would definitely need more than EG)

In these terms, please bring back MADMAX!

    AI is from Virginia.
    Eddie is from Philly.

Just curious. What is the name of Eddie Grifin's baby's mom name?

I remember seeing Jiminez. What was her first name.

    Who here has gang ties?

^---- Most stupidest question I have ever asked on the BBS.

I hope Eddie is fine, and okay as a person. I hope he gets his **** cleared up. That is just the nature of the NBA and pro sports.

There are some money seeking b****es out there that are in it for the money and the lifestyle. I think the NBA has that rookie program that tells them about it. I don't know if it is working or not. Obviously, it didn't work for Eddie.

Is eddies money grubbing girl from Houston area, or from Philly, or somewhere else?
