I am curious what Jacobsen has shown you so far that would make you want to keep him around. As far as I can tell, he is exactly who he is: a guy who was out of the league, and for good reason, looks like.

Let me put it this way: If Yao or Deke get some kind of an injury that has them out for several games, what are you going to do?

I think Haryasz has the lead over Jacobsen.

Cuts: Sura (injury thing doesn't seem to be going too well), Azubuike, Jacobsen, Haryasz (Chronicle actually said he was redundent because we have so many big guys  ).

Keep: Padgett (been excellent in preseason), Bowen (sorry, the worthless vet wins out over the worthless rookies).

here is my opinion on who gets cut:

    1) Ryan Bowen- there is no need whatsoever for him to make the team

    2) Bob Sura- after watching VSPAN, i dont think we need Sura. Spanoulis is just as physical, but WAY quicker. + Sura "might" be able to play after the all-star break....im not giving someone a roster spot who "might" play later this season

    3) Haryasz- i dont care how big he is....he is not an NBA player

    4) Padgett- we have Novak and Battier that can play the 4 and shoot the 3

I think it would be a good idea to keep Azibuke around because he is a BIG, strong, athletic, young wing. Those guys dont come around very often. I think he can grow into a decent NBA player

cut Jacobson who can shoot, but keep Bowen? RyBo is brutal, and there is no need for him. We have many more guys this year that can play defense AND shoot, and Bowen isnt one of them...

the 14th and 15th players will not play much anyway. The two guys they keep should just be insurances policies. That being said, they should keep padget in case on of their shooters dont wrk out, and they should keep haryasz just in case a big (an already thin position), gets hurt.

We've got enough shooters without Jacobsen. Plus, I'm not even very convinced that he can be a good shooter under pressure. And, he gives you little otherwise. Even if I were to cut Bowen, Jacobsen is the last person I'd give his spot to. Plus, I see Bowen as a great practice player -- if you can run your set while Bowen is going spastic on you, then you're probably game-ready.

Can someone refresh my memory? How did we lose Scott Padgett last time? Did we cut him, or did he sign for more money elsewhere?

^ He was a free agent and we let him walk to NJ because we didn't have a place for him on our roster. It turned out to be a mistake. I'd like to see him back myself.

Unless CJ has looked much better in practice I think Scott Padgett gets the last spot. The signing of Wells and the extension and good play of Snyder just made CJ have no role, and he has no upside either. Probably best for the Rockets and CJ to part ways (he does get some $ for the part guarant contract), if he doesn't get picked up by another NBA team he can get a good contract overseas.

I think we can will cut the rest but can keep an eye on Azubuike and Haryasz who probably will play in the NDBL unaffiliated and maybe pick up later when Sura is retired. Or we will keep CJ (since his contract is part guar) and use the Sura retiring opening for Padgett.

Haha, my mom, who is a YOF turned Rockets fan, can't pronounce Azubuike, so she calls him 'Sbuike, which sounds like Spooky. I won't say that to him in person though ;)

I like the way he plays. A good guy to have in the backup role to get FOULS on Shaq in the championship.

And while he's getting you critical fouls, he's also getting you big rebounds!!!

    KEEP HARYASZ!!!!

(Geez that last name is just sick Hairy A$$) Keep him based on that alone!!!

    Sure goners:
Bowen -- JVG has said on record that if a player didn't need to be guarded, he shouldn't be on the floor. Nuff said, despite all the lovefest between JVG and Rybo in the past, the coach finally woke up.

Jacobsen -- We already have enough wingmen. The only thing he can do is shoot, and he is not doing that very well so far. And he doesn't have an upside like those rookies.

    Mostly likely to be in:
Padgett -- He can shoot. He is experienced. He knows what the coach want. He is a decent rebounder. He is cheap. He is a good insurance for any injury in the front court.

On the bubble: (one of these 3 will get the last spot)
Sura -- I don't think they are counting on him. He had already been injury prone before he had this current one. So even if he can come back, he is not likely to contribute much. The only thing that is going for him is the "intangibles" he brings. But Spanoulis seems to be getting his role now.

Azibuike -- If they don't keep Sura, they will give the spot to a young guy who may have some potential to develop into something useful. Between Azibuike and Haryasz, each of them has soemthing different. Azibuike is the only athletic guy in this bunch. The hope is that he may learn some true basketball skills some day. His upside is better than Haryasz in my opinion. The problem is, we already have enough wingmen.

Haryasz -- The only thing he has for him is size, which is important. JVG seems to be ready to use Howard and Hayes to backup Mutombo, which I think makes sense. Even though Haryasz is bigger than both of these guys, Hayes is a better rebounder/defender, and Howard is a better shooter. So Haryasz is pretty much useless for now. However, for long term consideration, Mutombo is not going to last, and Howard may be on the way out too. So the Rockets do need a back up big man in the future.

My gut feeling is that they will keep Padgett and Azibuike.

See, here's another one who is certain the Rox are reserving a roster spot for Sura.

I asked before, but I guess nobody saw it: WHY do people believe this? What is the rationale for keeping him on the roster, and what is the benefit to the team?

I am not trying to be snarky, I just want to understand the arcane workings. I assume it has something to do with contracts, caps, lux tax or injury exception, but I just don't know.

Ain't it great to be worrying about practice fodder? FWIW I think Rybo is cut, Sura retires...One of Buike / Jacobsen gets cut...and one of Haryasz / Padgett. (Four over the limit, yes?)

    haryasz jut been released

    http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/Rockets_release_Haryasz-192402-34.html

HOUSTON -- After surpassing the midway point of the preseason, the Rockets moved a step closer to finalizing its regular season roster.

Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson revealed Thursday that the team has waived forward/center Matt Haryasz.

Haryasz, 22, played in two preseason games at center, where the Rockets already have Yao Ming, Dikembe Mutombo and Juwan Howard. Second-year forward Chuck Hayes has also played center in certain situations.

After signing with Houston following a solid summer with the Rockets' summer league team, Haryasz averaged 3.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in 9.5 minutes of action.

The Rockets now have 18 players and must reduce the roster to 15 prior to the regular season.

I thought if we wait until Dec or something we can ask for some kind of cap relief or injury exemption or something.

But yeah I see almost zero chance Sura plays again and it is a matter of time before his spot is freed up. I just don't see a big need for that 15th spot if waiting a few months helps the bottom line (money situation).
