They’re not gonna disband the police force and just leave it empty. Obviously they’re gonna restructure it
But who would they get to go through a parking lot and slash everybody's tires? https://www.motherjones.com/anti-ra...lashing-car-tires-at-protests-in-minneapolis/
As a resident of Minneapolis I am not comfortable with this and think this idea is half-baked emotional response to recent events. Other than the protests there hasn't been a significant input from the public regarding this and protests are not the way to get a significant public input. From the plans I've read so far they are focused on anti-poverty measures, anti-drug measures and community policing. Those are good and can reduce crime but the Minneapolis isn't an island. We had a molotov cocktail thrown into a Somali business in my neighborhood this past week and it sounds like those who did it came from outside. In fact over the last week we've had a lot of issues with people not from the city causing problems. The programs being proposed will do little to stop a Dylan Roof type situation and given that the Somali community has been demonized and threatened from people outside of Minneapolis this is a real concern. Further as someone who has been involved with my neighbors on community policing we are not equipped or should be expected to take up the burden of policing. I understand the goal is to disband and rebuild but I've yet to see a solid plan for how that will be accomplished and do feel this is being rushed. On the positive side even if the whole MPD were disbanded and not replaced we won't be without LE, there are Hennepin County Sheriffs, Metro Transit Police and State Highway Patrols. Those LE have their own jurisdiction and expanding their jurisdiction to cover internal Minneapolis policing will be a burden.
Drain the swamp - literally. And replace with something. Obviously something that actually make the city safer, solve crimes, handle rape cases and don’t murder. Someone got to take a leap and said heck with the system, let’s do something serious and not mess around the edge. Hope they succeed.
Obviously the existing police department will be replaced by some sort of police agency. Most of the people who run the country and set the polices driving wealth upward, think there is a free lunch and that you can defund public schools, healthcare of all kinds including mental healthcare, have low wages, have everyone run around with AR 15's and hand guns, have more inequality and control all the chaos this causes by having the armed police and prisons control things. It is more comforting to think some more racial sensitivity training or whatever for the police and all will be fine again.
I guess you didn't really understand what the word revolution meant when it was on that stuff you were supporting and marching for.
I've read some of the ideas on this and it actually makes a lot of sense. They aren't saying there will be no police force, just that the vast majority of calls into 9/11 don't require a police response and are not of violent crimes. So why are you using the police to respond to all of these incidences? Obviously if someone is being attacked or there is violence being committed, you need some version of police to respond. Just that the police don't have to be the involved in every response and community need. And the council already stated there is no way to do this overnight or that it's a quick process. I think it's worthwhile to be open minded and see what's on the table as far as new programs that make police response unnecessary for given situations. I do think "defund" or "disband" police is a poor choice of words that's going to freak a lot of people out.
Do you know where they're planning on drawing the line on what type of crime needs police intervention and what type doesn't? It can't just be violent crimes.
From what I have read they haven't figured that out yet and it's early in the process. But I can imagine that there are definitely things that might not require a police response.
I agree but I’m not sure this is the way to go. This process seems like it’s being driven by emotion and I will say it again as of now appears half baked. What is ironic is that Frey and Chief Arrandando have been working in making these changes but haven’t been in office that long. That said I just heard that the city charter requires a Police force so that might stop any rapid moves.
