Isn't that more along the lines of a medical retirement where all of his salary comes off their books but he still gets paid? T-Mac would have to first sign off on it and the Rockets will have to gamble that he does not play 10 games next season.
This was my understanding of it as well. In other words, it's not worth thinking about. McGrady is nothing more than an albatross at this point. No freebies.
League doctors would have to also agree, which is a bit hard to imagine for a 29 year old undergoing what has become an increasingly common surgery. Note 1: We can't trade his contract for another team to apply to have his salary come off the books (which would be attractive for a team way over the cap like the Knicks). Note 2: We can't apply for Tmac's salary to come off the books until 1 year from the injury (I would assume the last game he played, though the team may try and argue he was "injured" a long time ago). That means 2 things: 1: it would not create cap space this summer even if we knew for sure his career is over. 2: If TMac does throw in the towel (and the league agrees he's done), we won't know if he's off the books for next year's luxury tax purposes until right around this time next year (ie, the trade deadline, again).
True, but there's the 1% chance a team want him enough to waive the physical and sit him just for 2010. I don't think that's the case. I think it's when the injury originally occurred. I remember CD claiming the Rockets could get a medical retirement approved immediately for a player because the injury was over a year old and they had the papers to prove it or something to that effect.
Yep, you are right, what is the average? And Nike, if he is out NEXT year they can apply for the exception.......same as Sura. DD
DD, I think this whole thing is a bunch of BS on Tracy's part. I say he'll be suiting pretty soon. He' dooped everybody.
Dawson was notoriously unclear on the CBA. Provide a link to what you remember. Given how the medical retirement is voided if he plays in 10 games in any season, best case scenario would be the "injury" kicking into effect after the 9th most recent game McGrady played. DD: Please provide a link to when we got a disabled player's exception for Sura. I don't remember us getting one.
