I'm no Mavs apologist but this is really nothing. The assistant coach is talking to Dirk and not impeding the play at all. If you watch during the games, Carlisle is a step over the boundaries a lot, too. It's not called unless they're actively interfering with a player's space.
Yes, but he looks like Frankenstein's monster the way he's moving around. Like a guy who has back trouble trying to move. Really weird.
Here's my take: The coach is trying to get Dirk to fake like he is coming to double. This may create uncertainty in Harden's decision making and force him into making a move sooner than he wants to. Denying Ariza wouldn't be much of a priority, as I'm sure the Mavs would have been fine with that (even though Dirk on Ariza is a mismatch as well). Definitely wasn't trying to screw with Harden. If you look at Dirk, he's trying to imitate his coach's movements.
That's a dump Mavs fan on reddit if he thinks anything was happening that early in a 4-flat ISO. Just because it's on the Internet and written by a Mavs fan does not make it true or worthy of a thread here 4-flats do not work that way. Ariza was not a passing option at that point in the play. Nothing happens until the pick comes. It is so sigh how the internet seems to legitimize stupid takes
Probably lost a lot of mobility/stability in different directions over the years and only retained the movement he practiced most, his jumper. He's moving like McHale. Can't brake or push off his leg, so he's got to stutter step to a stop and stutter step to push off.
I enjoyed this fan fiction. I think Carlisle is a good coach, don't know if overrated. Chandler Parsons is definitely overrated, though, but despite that, the Mavs were doing quite well as an offensive focused team until Cuban screwed it up trading for Rondo, but then again, he was trying to add defense to the team for balance. You take your shot, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Are we watching the same thing? I saw him do most of those odd lunges off the court, no way blocking Ariza. Other poster's belief that he was just telling Dirk what to do, etc., is so much more plausible. Biassssss
HAHAHA. He was trying to give instruction to Dirk on faking the double team on Harden. Dirk completely uncoordinated lolll
Nothing in it. If Ariza was heads on he could've run into/made contact with that Mavs coach to win a non-sportmanslike tech.
True. But this is more than just a toe over the line. This guy was not only well into the court (almost the same distance as Ariza), but he was a mere side-step away from the player. Might have been a good idea for Ariza to intentionally bump into the guy. Free throw plus the ball would have been have been nice.
I'm surprised he had to yell at Dirk like that. After all this time, Dirk doesn't know to threaten to double team in that situation? He looked rattled, as did Tyson. I wouldn't be surprised to see a total mental meltdown late in game 4, if it's a rout by Houston.
Ariza needs to level the coach when he's on the court in the above diagram. There's no justification for him being on the out of bounds line, let alone nearly parallel to the court with Ariza. How are people defending this?
No one is defending that. It's not that uncommon though, so no one is surprised it wasn't called, especially during "down time" in the play. Our guys do it too. Any other time, TA should have caused a scene, but in this situation, it could have just distracted James and screwed up the possession.
But him being a step to Ariza's side was negligible to the play, which it often times is when a coach is on the court. The only time coaches are usually T'd up for that is when they come storming onto the court to yell at an official. Now, if Ariza had bumped into him, then it does need to be called. But from the looks of it, Ariza hardly notices how close he is as he's not even paying attention to the coach.
Seriously, for a future HOF'er and 17 year vet he can look really uncomfortable out there. Has anyone ever noticed how uncomfortable he looks in his jersey? It's like he can't figure out why that piece of fabric is draped on him...Like putting a sweater on a cat.
We won guys, lets not find things to nit pick on. it wasn't that bad. he was one step on the court, but i didnt see him trying to block any passes
I think the most interesting thing here is that Dirk has become such a poor defender that he requires real-time coaching.
