Dirk Nowitzki says the NBA will never get rid of flopping

"You're not going to cause somebody to stop it for $5,000 when the average player's salary is $5.5 million. And anyone who thought that was going to happen was allowing hope to prevail over reason."

Doesn't he call the shots? Who chose the number $5,000?

 

Well there you have it, [at least] 2 of the biggest stars in the NBA are okay with flopping. Shocker!

You could get rid of it, they just don't want to. You could suspend these guys but that's too "tough".

"Guys have been accustomed to doing it for years, and it's not even a bad thing. You're just trying to get the advantage. Any way you can get the advantage over an opponent to help your team win, then so be it."

"...just to sell it a little for the referees so it does get the call, I don't have a problem with that. I think that's part of the game."

Treat them like techs and suspend them. All this says is the league wants to LOOK like they are doing something about it but they aint doin ****. They want them to be part of the game, because it gives them more control.

 

It'd be too controversial. People would b**** and dispute the flop every time a suspension is handed out.

 

Where is the accountability for the referees? Do they get fined for calling that crap? A four figure fine I'm sure would hurt them a whole lot more than the player. So give the player a technical and fine the ref. Address the issue from both angles.

 

You mean the players who got called for it? **** em. The only reason it would be too controversial is because Lebron and Durant would always get away with it while other players may not. It would stop it within two months if players actually started getting suspended for it.

Sounds like you dont want to clean up the game.

 

He's completely right though, if there's a foul you have to exaggerate the contact a bit to make the refs notice the foul. Nothing bad with what Dirk said. He nowhere stated support for flops without contact/fouls.

He is a flopper and has flopped plenty. So I am not surprised he is defensive about it.

 

Best way to get rid of flopping is telling the refs to stop falling for it.

 

Do you really think Stern can do whatever he wants? He's answers to a board of directors, one that arguably has as much influence behind the scenes as he. I laugh at people who think Stern rigs the NBA lottery. If he has that much power then he'd be able to fine however much he wanted for flopping.

 

Very true. Why do the players keep getting blamed for trying to do their jobs (win games), but the refs get a complete pass from the league on their inability to do theirs?

 

Agree. And also, telling the refs to call the foul even without the players flopping (if there is a legit foul).

 

Maybe its been there, but I keep seeing more calls to have a FILM-only 4th ref who's in charge of reviewing things on film. Mostly for the regular things that need reviewing. (Though that ref could ultimately have more power over the on-court refs. And it bring on more technology costing some jobs)

Not sure what it'd do with flopping, but even more heightened "surveillance" presence and someone giving an IMMEDIATE call-down to say "No, just looked at it, that was a FLOP", that could make players play more fair.

 

People maybe can realize that, even WITH flopping, there are way LESS FOULS NOW per game than in the "old" days when they gashed and bloodied and beat each other up as a "man's game"

that's around 200 LESS free throw trips in the season per team. To be more exact:

Thats 5.55 LESS free every game. Thats 2 foul trips and 1 And-1 EVERY SINGLE GAME that we DON'T see. And thats PER TEAM. When you count in BOTH teams, should be even LESS than that when watching a game.

Meaning, they're letting them play MORE NOW. Or can go back to then where they called things more correct. And we'll then have even MORE STOPPAGE of play.

Basically, people might be griping too much now, or are not seeing that things have trended to what they want. We as FANS might be "flopping" from the contact the game is giving us lol.

 

and he's 100% right...despite all of the noise, i just dont think the league is really trying that hard...well see what happens going forward but i think if the league really wanted to, they could...how about 1 game suspensions? in the playoffs that would be huge
