Sorry, but wonder why Mchale wants him to be a shooter in the first place? If they sign Him as The Lin during the Linsanity, then he has to play as a pg, not shooting guard.
Small sample size. It's easy to defend Lin's weaknesses, just like it's easy to dismiss his strengths.
Some advice for those arguing in a circular pattern: you cannot use logic to debate with someone who is illogical. ex. You say the sky is blue because of the way light is bent through the atmosphere. They say the sky is red. Kinda hopeless debate - the law of diminishing returns really is in use here. I don't think either side will ever convince the other side of their logic.
I'll also bite. Here are some players that have averaged worse than 35% FG (on at least 10 attempts/game) and 20% 3PT (on at least 3 attempts/game) over 4 or more games in their careers: Aaron Afflalo (40.6% career 3PT shooter), Danny Ainge (37.8%), Ray Allen (40.1%), Dell Curry (40.2%), Jeff Hornacek (40.3%), Reggie Miller (39.5%), Anthony Morrow (42.7%), Dirk Nowitzki (38.0%), Steve Nash (42.8%), Peja Stojakovic (40.1%), Jason Terry (38.0%). Even great shooters can have periods where their shots don't go in. Get over it.
Charges aren't good but its mean that he's being aggressive and an aggressive PG is always a good thing. Good things happens when a player is playing aggressively more often than not. Like Morey said, a lot of good young guards has a lot of turnovers in their early careers. You can't expect a young PG that controls most of the team's possession to not commit turnovers. They will make mistakes but as time goes on, they will slowly learn from it and adjust.
Lin's ball handling skills are poor. Bayless was able to cause Lin to turn the ball over on more than one occasion as a result of pressure and Conley did the same iirc. I always felt that Lin's lack of handles were exposed after Mario Chalmers shut him down with ball pressure last season at Miami. So far, this season, it looks like that wasn't a fluke.
His ball handing skills are good, it's just the way he exposes the ball. And I'm not a Lin apologist, even though he had a big 4th quarter, I hated the way he played today. Being a rookie, first time against Miami's D, fine, I'll let it slide, but he looked SCARED again...but against Jerryd Bayless, unacceptable. If he doesn't get it together, every single PG is going to play full court pressure from now on and essentially take him out of the game.
Lin really needs to add a floater to his game. He's not really even committing many charges, but a lot of the time he gets into the paint and is not able to get a good shot off. His handle is questionable as well. Jared Bayless should not be disrupting his game. Aside from those issues, I like what he's doing out there.
Way to easy to get TO's out of Lin. Full court pressure and he's guaranteed to cough up the ball a few times. Surprised teams don't do it more.
Really? How about Deron last game against MIami where they got blown out and he got 6 turnovers. I guess you didn't catch that in espn or maybe SAS was too busy to report that game for you.
Lin had 4 TO's today right. 1 was a travel & 1 was a pass to Omer who fumbled it. So that leaves two TO's.
At this point that goes for the entire team, especially Harden. We really need better coaching on how the players should approach offensive sets.
There is a price that is paid when opposing guards play ultra aggressive against Lin to try to make him cough up the ball. They end up fouling him, resulting in team fouls that lead to free throws later. Eg, in tonight's game, I counted at least 3 team fouls that were accumulated playing that kind of D on Lin. That even resulted in Tony Allen sitting on the bench for a while, freeing up Harden, who in the next play immediately drove on the replacement for Allen and dunked the ball. Count the turnovers but also count the price paid by the opposing team for trying to force TOs out of Lin.
Complete overstatement... He was playing 38 minutes a game going into the Miami game last year.. he also played against other good defensive PG's like George Hill of the top of my head and did fine. His handle has been better this year than it has last year overall... tonight he was a little careless with the ball trying to do to much with his dribble.
