Such accusation is baseless. Injuries happen. It is a combination of the long grinding season which includes his tour of duty for his country. Players break down and instead of pointing out faults, they should just wish him well and hope for a immediate FULL RECOVERY.

Another thing, if a lot of you are talking about he cant play the minutes to get paid for. Then why not lower the minutes so that he is performing for the pay? Lowered minutes and playing compared to not playing?

Not true. If there are no centers in the past to compare Yao's minutes to, then no one can say the Rockets are playing him too much. Based upon what frame of reference? Because he got hurt? So anytime he gets hurt, it's because he plays too much?

I agree. And they were. See my previous posts about his minutes. I gave proof that his minutes are not "excessive". If you look in the most recent season, you can see his minutes were decreased from the usual starter-type minutes for the center position. Now what? Should we just let him be a spectator? lol.

Backup center for what? Yao barely plays starter minutes for the season on average. Any less minutes and you wouldn't be able to tell who was the starter and who was the backup - it would be a platoon system. lol.

I think its actually caused by yao being huge, that really makes it hard to keep his lower body healthy.

and yes he should have rested him in the offseason, but its actually nobodies fault, juat the fact that his body cant cope with the amount of wear and tear of playing all year round.......

to give a example i think a smaller guy, like lets use dwight, he prob, wouldnt break down if he had to play in the weak chinese basketball

now we got to wait and hope yao has a great recovery

You're taking some liberties with rounding there. Two of those years, he averaged the 33-34 minutes you seem to say contributed to him being able to play 77 games this past season - not the 36 minutes you stated :

    2005-2006 : 34.2 mins, 57 games
    2006-2007 : 33.8 mins, 48 games
    2007-2008 : 37.2 mins, 55 games

If Yao can't play over 30 minutes a game.

WTF is he getting 20mil a year for? To sit on his 7'6 big ass?

No, Yao is PAID to play BIG MINUTES. If he can't do that, re work the contract and lower his pay income. If he can't do what the Houston Rockets are paying him to do, then there is no need for Yao to get paid as much as he does.

People think if Yao couldn't handle playtime like other superstars, he doesn't deserve max salary. But, you guys should remember that other superstars cannot help nba earn so much money from China, they cannot help their teammates to get shoe contracts either.

Yao is a golden cash cow. The rockets should have used him more carefully.

The current result (Yao to miss entire season, 0 game on national tv, losing sponsors, ...) is a huge loss for the rockets.

you took some liberty at rounding though as well.

2005-2007 (34.2 and 33.8 is 34 minutes averaged) not the 33-34 like you mentioned. Its 34.0 on the dot.

33.6 minutes is what he averaged to play 77 games.

When I said 36 it was average (what I thought without calculating, just looking at numbers) was from 2005-2008. After calculating it it was 35.06

    2 things

1- asking a 7-6 man @ 300+ lbs to play 36-38 minutes a game is foolish. It's been well documented players above 7-4 are injury prone. Stop the madness on thinking he can play 36+ a game. Yes 30-32 minutes are still starter minutes.

2- it's also not about Yao's minutes it's about having a good rotation too. Lack of a good backup combined with the worst rotation ever. 15 minutes straight before sitting, sits for 5-6 minutes and than finishes the half. Than another 15 minutes before sitting 3-4 minutes depending on the situation he goes in earlier in the 4th. Not even Lebron or Kobe play 15 minutes straight minutes in a regular season game, especially in the 1st half. Than you add in the fact he gets beat up all day inside with lack of calls.

Some of you guys just can't accept a man has limits. Instead of trying to keep banging your head against the wall, why not just use a proper rotation with a good backup C and sit him on back to back games. We don't need to force him to play 82 games @ 38 minutes. We need him in the playoffs. If we don't want to adjust than he needs to be traded. However the Rockets are committed to him unroll 2011. Better get our dollars worth.

Sorry, but it is indeed irrelevant to compare Yao to any other center. There has never been another center with his combination of size and strength. Any attempt to compare Yao to other centers is essentially comparing apples to oranges. Whether or not the Rockets play him too much should be determined by a case by case analysis.

If you look at his stats, you'll see that as his minutes and weight (due to increase of muscle) increase, his injuries increase as well.

Even though he plays fewer minutes than most centers, the minutes he does play are very physical. How many other centers have such a refined post game that they have to jockey for position as soon as they cross the 3 pt line? How many other centers are the offensive focal point of their team?

But Coach 'A' did play Yao Ming too much! :p
But also the Chinese Basketball Association made too many demands on his services! :p
Combined they should carry the blame! :p

No. I didn't round. I gave the exact numbers not averages. Why are you averaging 3 seasons to come to a conclusion? My point was you stated when his minutes were cut this past season, he could play 77 games.

33.6 minutes allowed him to play 77 games

    but... what?

33.8 minutes only allowed him to play 46 games?
34.2 minutes only allowed him to play 55 games?

Are you saying 0.2 - 0.6 minutes is the difference between Yao playing nearly an entire season and breaking his foot? lol.

My point has always been, Yao is injury prone because of his size and/or freakish accidents. His minutes played in the NBA didn't have as big an impact as people have said. His year-round play of basketball *may* have also been at fault, but I don't know.

What amazes me is that his foot wasn't more closely monitored after the first injury. You'd think they'd be doing bone scans every few weeks to see if any kind of stress in the bone was being apparent and adjust his minutes accordingly.

At the end of the day, it's up to Yao to work with his doctor and team to address the minutes...but yao is too much of a competitor, and so is adelman.

No one grows up dreaming to play 20 minutes a game in the NBA - every player wants to be iin there for as long as possible.

Did playing an 82 game season decrease the structural intergrety of the bone and help facilitate his injury - I think it's very likely. His NBA Career was inevitably going to do that, not the fault of Adelman or the Rockets.

It's the same thing as gymnastics being hard on joints.

In this case, I think the Chinese are exacting revenge for a lot of the finger pointing from the u.s. and Rockets fans that they are to blame which is ridiculous.

All of his injuries have occured towards the NBA season....not the beginning - this suggests it's the nBA, not the CBA that is the cause.

Size and strength? Muresan, Shaq, and Mark Eaton. Muresan was taller and about the same weight. Shaq is shorter, but weighed more at his peak weight. Mark Eaton was 7'4"/290 - about the same size as when Yao when he came into the league. All were ridiculously strong.

I've already proven it is a fallacy to say that his injuried increased or decreased as his minutes did. His minutes increased and decreased the past 3-4 years and it didn't matter - he was injured.

Could you please post his weight progression over the years? I would like to see this. I know Yao has increased from approximately 290/295 to 315-320 and back down to around 305-310, I think. As you can see, he has still been injured. But I am not certain, so please post his weight progression year-to-year.

The centers I named played in a more physical league and were pounded on all game long and were the focus of their offenses. Today? What centers? There are probably a handful of true centers left in this league that get major minutes. Yao has no one of his size that pounds on him as much as the centers I posted did back then. You'll have to come up with a better argument than that. :)

Actually my point was showing his first 3 years combined since he only missed 2 games combined. So when his minutes boosted a big 3-4 minutes for the next 3 seasons (especially 7 minutes in 07-08) I averaged them out. First 3 seasons then the next 3 seasons.

Then his minutes were reduced for his last season and voila he played more games.

I remember my sig when I first joined this site was on this topic. Def not something I am pulling outta my butt.

I dont know why his minutes this year is identical to that 05-07 but yet he got hurt. Like you said freak accidents. But I do believe his minutes should be lowered.

I also think he has probably been training better to increase durability. A lot can change in years. We cant really make a better decision unless we have training methods, weight and other such stats to compare those years.

Another thing to take into thought is that Adelman said he lessened his practice time that year. A big thing to consider.....to answer your question

While this is fun picking these posts off one by one, can someone answer the following question :

Didn't Yao have foot problems before he was drafted? If so, it seems as if the Rockets were causing his foot problems even before he was drafted. ;)
