To be honest, we don't need Deke. He's too old, and can only provide some blocks / rebounds.

What we need is a backup center who is at least 7'0. We just need someone who is good enough to play 5-10 minutes. Scola / Landry can fill in most of the time, but on teams that are tall, we are in trouble when Yao is out.

So I think some of you are overestimating Deke's usefulness. He's ancient, and probably won't be capable of playing at a high level. Even last year, he wasn't the same as the previous years.

It's time to cut ties, and find someone else. There's gotta be a 7'0+ backup center. Maybe we can trade Head for him.

Deke - is old, and has no offensive game.......we use a smaller 2nd unit.....maybe we sign him late in the season, but right now......Deke.....is not needed.

i miss Deke. Its hard not to look at the bench and see him standing up cheering on. I said once and il say it again. people underestimate his effect on the team. His attitude and the way he is and what he does for the team psychologically i think is the difference in winning and not winning a champoinship. Please sign this guy, put him on the bench. and give him a few minutes a game to block a shot or two

If we can't get back Deke we better find someone 6'10"+ to backup Yao. Energy and effort can't make up for the severe lack of height we have all the time. Even if it's a scrub.

    Some realistic players:

    Ryan Hollins - Charlotte
    Steven Hunter - Denver
    Joe Smith/Mouhamed Sene - OKC
    Brian Skinner - LAC
    Hilton Armstrong/Melvin Ely - NO
    Shelden Williams - Sacramento

I would've mentioned Etan Thomas and Dan Gazuric but their contracts are way too heavy.

Morey is probably waiting until we go into our usual injury curse in the middle season to sign him.

We definetly need size, especially in the playoffs and if Mutombo wants to come back, you take him back !! It's that simple, he's a veteran and you have to respect a guy like that. You can't just pass up on him.
But like some1 said, if we see him at all, it probably be around Jan / Feb :(

We need another big 7 footer / 6'11- 6'10 guy in the meantime for Hayes & Head :)

IFMutombo can still play. I might have a change of heart! I can see him needed when the second team comes in to play, his defence will be greatly needed- I wish he was with us on Tuesday of this week!
I also hope that Coach A will give a few mins. to Von Wafer to make a contribution to our team, possibly in a tight 4th qtr. :p

I just saw Deke on CNN, the end of a segment where he talked about voting and Obama. Lou Dobbs said Mutombo wants to get back on the court and finish his career with the Rockets.

None the less Deke or not we need a tall center as the rest of you said Ryan Hollins is young and athletic and VERY cheap

He did not say he wants to get back.....

It said that Yao WILL return to the rockets this season to finish his career, and then will retire.

EXACTLY! I've said this in two other threads. Everybody keeps calling for Deke but fail to realise that he didn't back up Yao much last year. For the most part he was on the bench racking up DNP-CD's until Yao went down.

Id much rather have deke in, and cutting down Yao's time to ~34 per game, especially in games where we're up by 10+, like against OKC, in which case he had an unnecessary 39.

And dont you wanna see Ron Artest contributing his own Deke impersonation?
