One more thing - are you going to be taking pictures mostly indoors or outdoors? The main downside to the T1 is that it has a weak flash, so it is not a great indoors low-light camera.

What is wrong with Kodak cameras?

Wow. Thanks for the reccomendations all. I'm hearing consistent themes with all the advice, which is helpful.

The 5 megapixels are too expensive given the amount i will use this. I think I'm going to focus on a 3.2-4. Size is definitely a factor, so if I can fit it into the pockets of my baggy jeans, it will make me happy.

I think I'm going to go to Best Buy this weekend and play around with them some. Based on yalls help and my research, I am focused on the following:

    Canon PowerShot S45, G3, A80, SD10
    Nikon Coolpix 4300
    Olympus Camedia D40
    Minolta Dimage F100

After reading Vengeance's comment about Sony's and the problems I have had in the past with other Sony products, I'm staying away from that.

    Thanks a lot all.

TL -- make sure you look online at epinions.com and other review sites to see what other people think, but I think you're right-on for going to play with them. The most important thing about any product is reliability, but you can't determine that at the store. Number two is usability, and that's something you CAN figure out in the store. If you can figure out how to use it and some of the more important features without much difficulty, it's a big plus. You don't want something you've got to spend hours trying to figure out.

That is a tiny hard drive. The smallest I have seen. It looks to be the size of a sd memory card but I imagine a hard drive would hold a lot more info.

Kodak cameras are plastic and take crappy pics. I would rather have the metal case that my cannon has. The knock that I have on Sony is that their memory sticks (generally) are proprietary.

Good point -- they work only with other Sony devices. That's okay if you own a bunch of Sony stuff -- for instance, I was able to to put my memory stick in my Clie and it would show all the pictures on there. Worked great. But my Clie got stolen, so that doesn't help me any more. Also, the price of SD (the most common format) memory cards has started to come down notably faster than the Sony memory sticks.

I think I may get in on this

<i>edit:</i> forget it -- it probably will be sold out in your area -- looks almost like a bait and switch . . .

Thanks for all the help everyone. I bought the Canon A70 (for $200). Although the shutter speed is a bit slow, I like everything else.

Now I just have to get another memory card and some rechargable batteries.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but if you plan on taking any close-ups or anything in low light, DEFINITELY get something with image stabalization. You can always turn it off, but if you don't have it, you better have a tripod or it will take 5 or 6 shots just to get one that isn't blurry.

I love my little Nikon, but it is almost time for a new one.

    HP Photosmart 945

    It is about $450 retail.

    • 5.3 megapixel total resolution
    • 56x total zoom (8x optical, 7x digital)
    • 32MB memory card
    • 2" color LCD
    • Video clip capture with audio
    • Direct photo printing
    • HP Adaptive Lighting technology

I have this camera. Somewhat slow shutter speed and only a 32 MB memory card included are the only drawbacks. One of the best prices for a 5+ megapixel camera around.

The "digital flash" is amazing. You can take awesome low light photos without using the real flash. Cool camera.

You can often buy it bundled with a decent HP printer for even bigger discount.

Ok, I'm on the cusp of purchasing the Sony T1. I've looked at it for months (well before the Steven Tyler commercial).

It's really a great camera. There was also the T11 only sold in Japan, but it's just the same camera but more stylish.

I found the T1 and 256 MB Pro Duo Memory Stick for VERY good prices (T1 for as low as $364 and the memory stick for $89), but I just can't decide whether to go ahead now and get it.

I know it's a great camera and it's not that I'm considering another one, it's just that I keep on hearing that processers are going to start showing up in cameras by the fall. How true that is I do not know.

So would it be wise for me to just go ahead and purchase the T1 or wait? If yes, are these vendors too shady?:

    Camera
    Memory Stick

    Thanks.

I just got a Sony Cybershot point and click DSC-P100 for fathers day. Love this thing and so lite

Featuring a huge 1/1.8” Super HAD™ CCD, Sony’s innovative Real Imaging Processor, and a 3X optical zoom Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens, the Sony DSC-P100 gives you all of the features you would expect from a full-sized 5 Megapixel digital camera in a pocket-sized design.
The DSC-P100 is also amazingly easy to use, thanks to its large 1.8-inch LCD monitor, 5 area multi-point auto focus and auto focus illuminator, and selectable focus mode. It even includes PictBridge™ compatibility for simple printing without the need of a personal computer.

This thing is bad. It has unlimited video as long as you have a big enough memory stick.

That looks like a cool camera, 3x's optical zoom and 6x's digital, 5.0 mp..small. ..sony..

..that's a good link for deals...

    I like the Fuji Finepix S-5000 w/ 10x's optical zoom and 2.2x's digital 3.1 mp ($229.00):
    http://www.amphotoworld.com/product.asp?id=fjfps5000

    OR

    the Fuji Finepix S602 w/ 6x's optical and 4.4x's digital, 6 mp ($279.00:

    http://www.amphotoworld.com/product.asp?id=fjfps602

I've been reading about the s-5000 and it looks like it has some pretty advanced manual and automatic features.

I'm looking for a camera with a lot of optical zoom and decent mp for under $300. Those top the list...have you ever bought anything from that site? It says it has a 7 day satisfaction quarantee with a 5% restocking fee.

Nah, haven't yet, although I've called them a couple times with questions.

Both times they weren't very helpful and arguably downright rude when I simply asked: Why is the price so low?

The salesman's response: because that's the price we have.

I practically had to beg him for an answer, and then came to the correct conclusion on myself that they buy in bulk, or according to him: We buy in extreme bulk."

I'll probably buy it from them, especially considering that it's still going for $500 at Best Buy or Circuit City.

There's also a black version, but for more: http://www.amphotoworld.com/product.asp?id=sndsct1b

Oh, and this is the T11:

    $50 more for black...that sucks.
    Black looks cooler, but $50.
