Not at all.....but there is a certain level of moral terpitude that has to exist for civil society to prosper.....

Promoting immoral acts such as gay sex and murderous acts like killing babies (which by the way promotes premiscuous sex) does nothing but chip away at the overal level societal morality.

what's funny is that it's the conservatives who decry homosexuality the most who end up ****ing some guy in a bathroom or hiring male hookers or blowing for blow.

in fact, i think it's safe to say you could add that as one of the generalizations... "conservatives are far more sexually repressed."

 

Morality is subjective, and as a person who wants to be left alone, I find it difficult to accept the notion that morality needs to be determined for me.

It's safe to say that with our dysfunctional 2 party system, both parties have tents big enough to house both "types" while still claiming something completely different.

I doubt true fiscal libertarians agree much with social conservatives from the religious right, but they're both considered Conservative.

If you want to impose "societal morality" upon others, then how is that different than people wanting to impose their ideals on corporations they feel operate under unethical conditions?

Children believe wholeheartedly in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

Conservatives believe that there is an "equal playing field" and that anyone who is industrious enough will succeed as long as we keep paying fealty to our good corporate masters.

If believing that we should all care about and share responsibility for helping those less fortunate falls on all our shoulders makes me childlike, I say pass the pacifier.

If believing in hardscrabble pull yourself up by your bootstraps even if you don't have any boots or feet, Ayn Randian social Darwinism is the mark of "adulthood" then I am happy to be Peter Pan.

I'm also not sure what is immoral about gay sex that could not be said about any kind of sex. You share pleasure with someone you love, or not.... Exactly the same for gays and straights. Unless you have the hard core religious belief that sex is only for procreation and never for recreation...its almost impossible to fathom a "moral" difference.

 

You'd be seen as too moderate, which is almost assumed as having NO valid opinion. Which I think is a stupid assumption people make that anyone not in those two parties are "indecisive".

What conservatives are right about, in the survival of the fittest sense, is that the stronger people will make their voice heard and presence felt. On BOTH sides. Which mean both sides feel they represent everyone else in the world. Why shouldnt they? The fate of the world exists in their hands.

Its like the staunch bible thumping dad and the looser more easy going emotional wife having a big loud argument. And the kid in the other room trying to do his homework distracted by it all is thinking "I CANT get anything done here. Just PLEASE shut the HELL UP already". "I dont want to be like ANY of you when I'm older"

Thats VERY much true. I'll even call it an absolute. Basically, liberals don't believe in "What you don't know won't hurt you". Liberals WILL learn about what hurts.

Liberals spend so much time DEBUNKING everything and facing "inconvenient truths" head on, that they've destructed existence down to its most flimsiest framework. The EXCELLENT thing is most learn the real truth instead of hiding from it, so it inspires themselves to teach others.

The negative is liberals have (what I think is) an over-reliance on science to solve everything. The key part is the UNHAPPINESS - we're in a world where people are brought up to dislike things about themselves and humanity. Therefore leading to SELF HATRED, guilt for not doing the right thing. And having hate for the world and wanting to rearrange everything. Therefore putting too much trust in science which has all the "true" answers.

Unfortunately there is no end to liberal thought, liberals can be TOO OPEN MINDED. (Yes I'm calling US out on that) but its better than being blind.

Every problem is historically traced to "Macho Men" being behind the decisions to make it happen. Therefore its slowly neutering Macho Men who all they do is fight, sex, curse and kill. Its why traditionally masculine men are going by the wayside. Because they're seen as too staunch, ignorant and hostile to be rational to hold power.

In the prison camera thread, Ottomaton posted a Norway prison where half the prison guards are female. This is a triumph of liberalism. This is where things are going. The days of big boys and their big toys, if liberals have their way, will be numbered.

While Libs support social welfare, Conservatives support Corporate welfare.

The $$$ spent to bail out Chrysler (1970s) and the Savings and Loan Industry (late 1980s) is more than 10 times the $$$ spent on social welfare from inception. Add to it the GM and the Financial Industry bailout, you begin to realize the obscene $$$ the US spents on corporate welfare

 

So....I agree with the first part of your post, but I have no idea how it relates to anything I said in my post that you quoted. As for the second part of your post, I wish it was that easy.

 

Taxing cigs and fast food is not an attempt to dictate morality, so I don't see how that's relevant to the post you're quoting. Those taxes are an attempt to make people pay for the negative externalities associated with their actions.

All the people who continue to vote for conservatives because of the abortion issue have nothing to show for it. Republicans have been in control and have done nothing to do away with legal abortion on the national level. Of course, on the state level there have been conservatives that have made it a requirement that a woman consent to vaginal probing to get an abortion. That's a great step.

Having to pay for the negative effects that your actions cause for others is oppression? I thought conservatives were supposed to be the ones that believed in accountability.

You're deluding yourself if you don't think society pays for the individual effects of an unhealthy diet or lifestyle. If you have a better solution to make people accountable without bankrupting them for poor choices, by all means....

On the other hand, the revenue stream from sin taxes can make government planners too dependent upon them. It's a case where its success is counterintuitive to its survival.

It's not a perfect solution, just better in a realistic setting than the ones we have now.
