I saw a bright light in the sky last night and then blacked out. I think I got probed because my ass hurts. Could be an alien abduction or it could be the chili and beer.
damn, those aliens are sneaky. showing up the 1 day in the year everyone is shooting off a bunch of lights in the sky.
It screws with a whole lot of the scriptural stuff which gives man a unique relationship with and position relative to God. Google "Christianity" and "aliens" and you can find comments on the subject from the Vatican on down to 'Westboro Baptist'-type fringe crazies addressing whether aliens are or are not compatible with Christianity.
But our military might was too much for the outerspace interlopers as their outmatched fantastic flying machines exploded light fireworks in the night sky.
Everything screws with doctrine if you want it too. The Catholic Church, for example, allows for the existence of life on other planets.
Right, but that wasn't always the case. A decade ago, nobody official was willing to touch the subject. That is one of those post-Vatican II, "we are the new, hip church" announcements. And they certainly haven't decided whether aliens have souls or whether Jesus' sacrifice applies to them. Edit: Actually, with a bit of research, the Vatican still won't touch the subject. The sensationalistic headline about "The Vatican" comes from a statement by the Vatican astronomer who talked about aliens in an interview. But in fact, the official doctrine people and the pope are totally silent about official doctrine regarding the possibility of the existence of aliens.
I'm a Christian and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if there were aliens...nor would it threaten my faith. Thanks for the concern though.
I didn't say it would threaten your faith. I said it would create a whole bunch of difficult to answer questions, and the answers to those questions would have profound effects on the mechanics of the various sects of Christianity. Christian sects are dividing in half and splitting up over social questions like gay marriage. All of the issues that the aliens could present could cause massive doctrinal fractures. I don't want to plot out a science fiction novel, but I can think of half a dozen variables that would make it very difficult to classify them as "people" that need to be evangelized.
Just given you the perspective of someone who claims the faith. Yeah, I'm sure people will crap bricks about anything new.
Agreed. I'm sure everyone (including ToyCen and everyone else on the planet) will s**t themselves inside out should aliens ever decide to appear.
Just got off work, so here is my late response to the whole Christian/Alien conflict.... I've expressed my beliefs before about this but I'll say them again. The Bible states the devil is the 'prince of the sky', which makes me believe that "aliens" are only demons in disguise. During the end of times, the Bible says the world will believe a lie as to what happens when the rapture occurs. I don't see where the whole "people have been abducted by aliens!" idea would not be logical in this situation. Makes sense to me. So in short... Devil ----> Demons ------> Aliens --------> UFO's/Flying saucers are physical objects being introduced to the public, to build up a world of questions and doubts to peoples minds, that when the rapture occurs, people will come down to the only logical conclusion to everyone going missing at the same time is.... aliens. Does this make sense or am I alone here?
ToyCen - I have more faith in there being alien beings in the cosmos than I do in the 19th and 20th century concepts of the "Rapture." I'll turn this into a D&D thread if we start talking about that concept. I would suggest you read books from others in the Church who strongly disagree with the idea that the concept of the Rapture is Biblical.
