Yes I would have still gone for it. If I see a foul or homerun ball coming at me, I'm diving in any direction for it, oblivious to all that is around me, be it a big burly guy ready to kick my ass or a child. I'm not saying it's right, but I would still do it. Even after the ball landed and no one noticed, I'd dive for it just to make sure I'm the first one to get it. Call me what you want, but I'm being honest. I actually felt bad for the guy when I saw how badly he was portrayed. Kids get everything handed to them, adults don't.
don't try to insult my intelligence with your continued assault on the finest racehorse in 20 years!!!
this is just funny!!!!! yeah...those kids have been screwing us for years!!! held down by the man...i mean the kid!!
I think one of the reasons for that is the thought that no grown-up would care whether they had a Gary Matthews, Jr. hit foul ball. If it comes to me, I'd attempt a catch, but if it's landed a row in front of me, it wasn't mine to catch. And if I were Tom Hicks, that guy would be banned from the Ballpark for life for purposely endangering the health and safety of the other fans. Forget about the fact that he kicked a kid to get the ball. It was a stupid move that any reasonable person would know could likely result in someone's injury. Plus, not to mention he gets to go the next several months being "that jerk who kicked a kid". I wouldn't think a Gary Matthews, Jr. foul ball would be worth that.
Oh, and if you dive under some lady's seat and get grabby here in Plano, they're going to charge you with attempted sexual assault. And if he had been in Detroit, he probably would've been stabbed to death.
Everyone is missing over a REALLY important part of the story that was shown on SportsCenter. At one point, while the guy was being a jackass and the kid hadn't gotten any souveneirs yet, a kid that looked to be somewhere between 7 and 10 went over and tried to give him his baseball. THAT kid deserves big props.
For those who think the guy going after the ball didn't really do anything wrong...watch the tape...he dives over the top of the kid (almost on top of him) and then it looks as though he wrestles with the kid's mom for the ball. I bet the kid wins an ESPY.
YES!!! Excellent post...there was another kid who had a foul ball who came over to give it to him and got a standing O...now THAT kid deserves an ESPY
Why does he have to be from Dallas? Or even Texas? Fans from other states do travel to other states to see their teams play.
NJ, I just read on another board that that kid was named "Fan of the Game" and won some prize or something.

I was at the astros - marlins game this year when ausmus hit a line drive right towards me. The ball went through my hands, hit my chest and bounced into the row in front of me and into the lap of an old lady. She didnt even ask if i wanted the ball she just smiled and kept it.
LOL! hell yea. i probaly would have just waited til she knodded off, old people tend to do that, and took the ball. anyway, you guys and espn are really ripping this guy. he just wanted a foul ball. i saw the footage couple times and the his legs just bumped the kid alittle. no big deal. the kid wasnt even hurt , he didnt know the fat guy was there.
He was wrong, he hit the little kid with his legs. The kid is lucky the a-holes shoes didn't hit him in the face.
After reading this thread, I keep thinking about... "Well, the jerk store called, and they're running out of you!" My dad once caught a foul ball at the Astrodome with his hat. We were right behind the screen, and Craig Biggio hit a foul ball high in the air behind the catcher. My dad took off his hat, waited, and the ball fell perfectly in the hat. Everyone around us applauded. I've had that ball for over 10 years now...
