    That is funny!

Assuming they don't use both names on the jersey, which is it "Yao" or "Ming?"

It sounds like Yao would be what is printed. Which makes sense cause thats more or less what is on his Chinese jersey.

So don't disrespect the Chinese culture by calling him Ming Yao. Why is this so hard to understand? The Chinese use the family name as the first name. Why don't we just respect their culture and accept the fact that Yao's first name is his family name and call him Yao Ming like the Chinese intended? Is it really all that complicated?

This is an old tired topic and it's not that damn complicated.

Or Eric Zhang. But that would be up to Yao Ming and with so many people that know him as Yao Ming I doubt that he would do that...but you never know.

Fellow Posters:- I have been discussing this question with my chinese family and I was surprised at the result! I aked how a person would be addressed, formally, semi formally and casual by a known acquaintance. The result was so strange that I must reverse my direction! Our number one pick should be known as 'Yao Ming' not 'Yao' or 'Ming',it will be in keeping with all situations and conform to what he will likely expect.Only the close family should call him Ming!!

NB. Ming is both a First(for some) and a Family Name (for others). This is why to us in the West it reads so easy in the Chinese order of Yao Ming. It will be right and fitting if his Rox Jersey said YAO MING.
