It does look like JVG style for 1st team. Yao on the post and 4 shooter outside. But the 2nd team is running RA's motion offense pretty well.
wtf, you juz explained to yourself why this is a stupid idea......because that will takes shots away from scola, tmac, artest, shane, barry, you name it.
But the question is, who can get yao the damn ball when he's in low post, as most teams would like to double him up when he's in low post. If we had a good dribbler like CP3 then there's no problem to get yao the damn ball, but we just don't have such a guy. Rafer has good dribbling skills but he can't walk through the barriers, no body cares his jumpers so they can concentrate on his move. Aaron is pretty good at both dribbling and shooting but he just doesn't know when he should pass the ball, so he is considered as a SG more than a PG.
I doubt JVG said anything Adelman, Turner, Sikma and co. don't know already. It's really a matter of the team getting on the same page and executing the plan. I also don't think the team is running "JVG Offense" per se... there are similarities, but that's mostly because pretty much any smart coach would know it's a good idea to give your all star center the ball down low.
when yao plays at 100% there is only one offense that makes sense; rudy/hakeem ball. 4 shooters on the perimeter, post and repost at will. ricks offense can be seen much more with yao out, and even more with yao and tracy out. the bench has been great at moving the ball, and moving without the ball.
JVG loves the Rockets. I think if Rick doesn't work out for the rockets, I could see Jeff coming back to the Rockets. That's just my opinion.
Whoaa.... this could be much ado about nothing. I love this little story. Classic JVG. Only one problem.... It looks like this anecdote did NOT happen this season, but instead, If I'm reading that blog correctly, it was Richard Justice relaying one of his favorite little JVG tidbits as a means of providing perspective. His blog post: http://blogs.chron.com/sportsjustice/archives/2008/11/let_me_introduc.html#comments __________________ Let me introduce you to Yao Ming. T-Mac lights up Wizards. Jeff Van Gundy said he would take Yao Ming around the locker room and re-introduce him to his teammates. ''This is Yao Ming,'' he would say. ''He's the most dominant low-post player in the NBA.'' His point would be that the Rockets had to get Yao more shots, get him more involved. Yao needs at least a dozen shots a game, probably more. He can be the centerpiece for everything the Rockets do because he sees the floor and has the ability to get the ball to the open man. The Rockets have looked sluggish on offense so far, and one reason is they're not making the extra pass. That's why the second group has looked so much better. That group is making the extra pass. What the Rockets need most of all is a healthy, happy Tracy McGrady, and that's what they had Friday in a 103-91 victrory over the Wizards. In Yao's last three games, he has has taken 9, 8 and 9 shots. That's not nearly enough. On nights when McGrady puts the Rockets on his back, it's not going to matter how many shots Yao gets. McGrady looked like the real Tracy McGrady in throwing in 14 points in a 6-minute, 16-second stretch of the fourth quarter as the Rockets erased a 9-point Washington lead. _______________________ The money quote is "said he would." That suggests this is one of JVG's old habits when he was coaching the Rockets. If JVG recently visited our lockerroom and chatted to our players--which, by the way, would be sort of a dick move to Adelamn, and I say this as JVG's #2 fan (only after Almu)--Justice would have worded it as: "Last week, Van Gundy paid a visit to the Rockets lockerroom, telling them......" So I'd be shocked if this happened this year. That being said, love the story and the sentiment.
The quote came from the ESPN broadcast the other night. Breen asked him what he would do to help the Rockets offensively and JVG said exactly that. That the first thing he would do is introduce Yao to his teammates again. I doubt seriously that it had any effect on Adelman and his coaching team's game plan, because everyone pretty much knows that Yao is irreplaceable. Including his coaches. I will have to see if I can upload the conversation, since I still have that game on my dvr.
Okay, my bad, I thought the OP was suggesting that JVG actually went to the Rockets locker room, recently, and had a talkin'-to with the players. (Which would be weird, right?) That's how I read the first post -- sorry for confusion.
that's true, last couple of games we've been running it through him, but we can still get alot more of the easy shots if people keep moving, we don't want it to be predictable, but people know what we want to do (give it to yao) and they still can't stop it half the time...there still should be more cutting, easy lay ups, dunks, the problem with posting yao all the time is thats a giant man clogging the paint, makes it hard for people to cut and get open lay ups...still i think it's better for us to run our offense through the big fella
If JVG coached this team with Ron, Landry, Brooks, Scola, etc his offense would be a lot better. Remember his teams rely 99% on Yao and Tmac because Chuck Hayes was a starter, Ju Howard was a major part of the rotation.
As Rasselas has said, the story was told about what JVG did when he was coach of the Rockets. You guys are getting it mixed up because of some extra time JVG and Yao spent together recently. There's no way that JVG would go around the Rocket's locker room and and act so presumptous, as if he were still the coach. So, no, JVG didn't save anything.
I don't think brooks, landry, and luis would be here, if jvg was the coach. However, I love JVG, now more than ever. There should be motivational posters on every wall of toyota center, that feature JVG's face.
nope. jvg said on the air what he "would do" to help the Rockets. read the rest of the thread. it's just jvg being jvg
