Damn I can't believe this. About 5 minutes after I posted hearing a rumor about Eddie dieing on Philly sports talk, I thought it was just a false rumor. I just logged back on and couldn't believe it was true. This really sucks.

    Very sad.

Lawndale is around where I live.

I don't know how a person can drive into a train on purpose or not... :(

    RIP

before the 2003 draft we could have traded eddie for the sonics two first round picks which turned out to be ridnour and collison and a future first round pick plus a player. cd turned it down. eg was released a few months later.

but as sad as it is, eddie griffin was a mediocre player at seton hall and in the nba. his character was deplorable and it ultimately cost him his career and quite possibly his life

I got to talk to Eddie before a Rockets game at the Meadowlands a couple of years ago. He was really nice and polite. I can't imagine what was going on in that guy's head during his life. Maybe he was really a nice guy, but he just couldn't control himself. It's a damn shame.

It saddens my hardened heart to hear that something like this happened to a player like Eddie Griffin. I think we, as fans, have a tendency to view these athletes as commodities and not people just like the rest of us. I now know I've been guilty of it, as all I can remember is impatiently waiting for Fast Eddie to "figure it out" and fulfill the promise so many had seen in him.

In any event, goodnight sweet prince and RIP.

He could have very well committed suicide. The kid was clearly troubled, so I wouldn't put it past him.

Sad, sad waste of a life...

" Officials said Griffin, 25, drove his SUV through a railroad crossing barrier, past flashing warning lights and into a moving train in the 5300 block of Lawndale about 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 17."

    From the Chron

He was either drunk/some drug or this was a deliberate suicide attempt.

I hate to say it - but I guarantee he was wasted.

Eddie was a tortured soul. :(

    RIP Eddie. :(

I don't want to see any jokes referencing his vehicular masturbating or making allusions to David Cronenberg's Crash.

18PPG 11RPG 4BPG 2 assists in his first year is "mediocre"?
Dude showed immense promise, even with his character issues.

Yao will be quite sad to hear of this. It's the 2nd teammate he's lost. Yao had some funny stories of Eddie buying him a girl. One showed up at his room but he politely declined but he appreciated the thought.

What a foolish man. He had the world handed to him on a silver platter and just pissed it all away. I hope he is in a better place now.

Life is all about choices, and he consistently chose poorly...
