I watched last night's "inside NBA". It was like crazy all over the place. Gary, Kenny and the other guy were yelling and screaming, like in a circus. The only reason I stayed to watch was to see how bad it could really be. Not really funny...

Kenny played his "role" just fine. I have no issues with Kenny or what he contributed to the team. The fact is that Kenny had many big moments and earned his ring, not in just one game. But everyone including Kenny, Gary or anyone else would have rode the magic that Hakeem had. Hakeem was unstoppable and anyone in the arena knew what he was gonna do and Kenny also knew what he was supposed to do. The offense was built around Hakeem "The Dream".

Gary= a younger, louder, dumber, balder Chuck. I couldn't be around Gary with his 'lemme AXE you a question' for more than 2 minutes.

cue the Gary Payton 'I'm a dumbass' scam.

Add Calvin Murphy to their show, and I'd pay to watch it.

Wait, did GP say that Kenny rode Hakeem's coattails to the championships?

Hold up....that "old oven mitt" is talking so much trash, he doesn't realize he rode the coattails of Shaq and Kobe in 2003-04 to win a title? Then, after being a journeyman the next season, had to ride the coattails of DWade and Shaq to get his 1st title. Once a tired old punk, always a tired old punk.

So to correct Kenny, it's 2-1. But Kenny earned his....the "old oven mitt" was getting desperate in his old age.

i think he meant it as he tried winning one in LA, but failed, hence the 2-1 comment in his next sentence

That's cracked me up for the last few years. I watched just about every Rockets game from '92 until when Kenny left, and I don't think I ever once remember Bill or Calvin call him The Jet. Not once. So when he broke that out on TNT, I was like, huh? But maybe my memory is bad. Does anyone else remember differently? I'm actually very interested in this.

Payton wasn't just tough against Kenny in this clip, he played Kenny so tight in '96 we let him go in favor of Cassell (eventually traded him too, though) ... Payton was tough as nails on both sides

Kenny actually was fast as hell in a straight line. He was also quick on offense. If he saw an opening to the basket that was not impeded, he could get to the rim and finish with a dunk, but I rarely saw him attack the basket if he thought he would get banged around. What was so odd is that he was absolutely pathetic when it came to lateral movement. He couldn't shuffle his feet to save his life and it was what led to his having a reputation for the matador defense that Payton was talking about. If I recall, he got the name "The Jet" when he was in high school or college. Kenny was never the stud in the pros that he was in college or on the playgrounds, but the guy had some crazy game. Check out this highlight reel from his UNC days :

Of course his vertical isn't quite the same nowadays :

Kenny's 7/11 in Game 1 of the 95 Finals v Orlando was his finest moment imho.

gary payton has no business on tv.

just because you were good at the game don"t mean you can call it.

you do realize that the Rockets education of some of the newer fans are based on videos and youtube right?

to them Kenny just had one good playoff game, which is not the case.

    http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl?id=1993_1169186

What he brings is seven years of experience, which the Rockets will need when they travel to Smith's hometown Thursday. The Rockets will seek their 15th consecutive victory against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. If they win, the Rockets' 15-0 record would tie the 1948-49 Washington Capitols for the best start in NBA history.

Last season, Smith had the best field-goal percentage among NBA guards (.520) and was fourth in the league in 3-point percentage (.483), setting a franchise record.

He averaged 9.2 points and 4.3 assists before he was injured this fall. He had started in 95 consecutive games before missing the Bulls game Nov. 23.

"It's nice to have Kenny back," power forward Otis Thorpe said. "He offers experience on the floor, quickness. He's going home, where he wants to show what he can do. It helps having a veteran in situations like that. On the other hand, everybody has been doing their part, from No. 12 on down."

Our ClutchFans historian comes through to teach n00bs Rocketball. Thank you, tinman.

I wish I had a smelly old garbaged oven mitt to stick in Payton's grill. Still can't stand the b*stard to this day.

that was his finest moment that people can youtube.

here's the Kenny vs Gary Payton matchup in 93..
we barely lost game 7 in seattle (one jumper away from winning)

Game 7/The key matchup: Kenny Smith vs. Gary Payton

    By EDDIE SEFKO
    Staff

Strengths: The Rockets' Smith is a potentially deadly jump shooter from inside or outside the 3-point arc. With the Sonics sagging on Hakeem Olajuwon and expected to do the same today against the resurgent Otis Thorpe, Smith will continue to get open shots. Seattle's Payton is a classic "dude with a 'tude." He is a defensive-minded guard with an attitude that he can shut down anybody. And he is a powerful driver to the basket.

Weaknesses: Smith is prone to defensive lapses and his ball-handling ranges from imaginative to shabby. His hesitancy to take open shots was the Rockets' undoing in Games 1 and 2 in Seattle. Payton's outside shot runs hot and cold and he tends to lose interest offensively if he is not involved from the start.

So far in the series: In the Sonics' three victories, Payton has averaged 19 points and hit 25 of 48 shots. In their three losses, he has averaged eight points and hit 12 of 28 shots. Smith? His numbers don't swing as wildly. But his Game 6 showing (30 points, 13-for-16 shooting) proved he is capable of handling the pressure, from the playoff atmosphere and from Payton.

Analysis: If Smith strokes the jumper and doesn't embarrass himself defensively, the Rockets win. If Payton creates offensively and shuts down Smith, the Sonics will win. One of the two won't happen.

"Oh yeah, you stole one on the way out." Ouch! They always seem to pick on Kenny but he'll come with some fire when he wants to.
