Another thing... Even if the Yankees have the best farm system, if there was a salary cap and revenue sharing they wouldn't be able to keep all of their prospects, eventually they would not be able to pay them. Also, I thought there was an issue with the MLB Draft and that international players weren't included, that is how the Yankees kept getting all of the good prospects? The Yankees have a monopoly, sure the Diamondbacks beat them last year in 7 games, but didn't they spend a lot of money to do it and possibly jeopardize their future seasons because of contracts? Look at the 97 Marlins, they had to dismantle because they couldn't pay. Does the NBA or NFL do revenue sharing? Or how do they split up the TV money?
The difference is that all the other professional leagues work together and realize that their profitability depends on the competitivness of the game. The fact that baseball operates as each club is an individual business and in competition with all the other clubs is one of the main reason that baseball is declining in popularity so fast. The strike needs to happen and the Union needs to be broken, let the players see what kind of money they can make out in the real world. The owners should implement a hard salary cap and say..."Take it or leave it" It would make the game a lot more interesting and you would feel that your team had a chance. DD
OMG!!!!! Knock me right on over...we agree!!!! It was bound to happen at some point. The only problem I see with that course of action is that the NLRB will get all involved and the mess won't be settled for YEARS. All of that being said, if I were an owner that is exactly what I would want to do.
