No, I didn't like his style at all, but I did like winning. I loved his interviews and when he called timeouts, but that’s about it. To me Rudy T use to let us get blown out before he would call a timeout. I hated the fact that he wouldn't foul if we where up by three with sec left because we got burned quit a few times. He did eventually smarten up though he in the Lakers game and guess what we won...as long as aldermen don’t make any excuses for losing like Rudy did I will be happy if he produce like he has in the past..
It wasn’t just the style that made it so painful to watch. It was the combination of a very rigid offensive scheme that severely limits what each player is allowed to do and a very monotonous roster of role players that are severely limited talent-wise. That combination makes for predictable and boring basketball. They consistently beat teams they were supposed to beat, but consistently lost to teams they were supposed to lose to. Every game looks the same as the previous game with very little deviation. It’s like watching the same episode of a TV show over and over again. There’s very little chance of Head, Battier, or Howard stepping up one night and busting out a +25 point game to carry the team to victory. Not only because they’re not capable, but also because the system limits them so much (strictly spot up shooters). It literally was a two-man or sometimes one-man show every night. I don’t find it to be all that different from the Steve/Cat ISO-mania offense a few years ago, nor Kobe’s one man show in LA. Certainly not less predictable. It’s debatable whether the system was the way it was because the roster was full of one-dimensional players or the roster is the way it is because the system called for one-dimensional shooters. But it made for boring basketball.
yao probably would've been benched by jvg after marbury crossed him up and floored his ass. 'you call that defense, you lumbering ogre???'
I liked it. I like watching good defensive teams. I also like well balanced basketball. I hate Phoenix and Golden State and want no part of a team that puts 100% of their energy into offense, and none into defense. It bores me, and it never wins championships. If the Rockets turn into that under Adelman (doubt it), then I will definitely not be watching as many games. Everyone is acting like the last 7 games we played are the only things they can remember. Why did everyone watch the last four years, and then come here to talk about it incessantly?
as a fan i love shutting down other teams, imposing our will, styming the other team's flow and getting the W at the end of the day. The W is what counts at the end of the day. if you like high scoring games, consider hopping on the Grizzlies bandwagon, or the Suns/Warriors who will never win it without playing D.
Hell yes I did. But then, I also loved the Barkley baking it in offense, and basically basketball throughout the '90s. I love it when my team can shut down the other team. Some people are too fixated on scoring.
In real life, I pride myself more on playing good D and getting boards than trying to be flashy on O so maybe I'm biased, but I appreciated our style and effort. If we had sucked, then it wouldn't have mattered what style we had.
The Pistons are in the East where the Rockets would probably still be playing. The Spurs have a very efficient offense...while their offense does not score a lot more than the JVG offense, it is none the less much more efficient. I BTW after putting up with that crap JVG calls an offense for 4 years I think people have every right to vent. And last, the second half of 04-05 was the one year that the offense really looked like an offense. But who were the catalyst's for that offense? Sura, Wesley, Barry and James. All were mid-season aquisitions except for Sura who was hurt until December that year so JVG did not have a chance to ruin thim with his off season program and pre-season.
Yes JVG ruins players with off- season programs and destroys them in the preseason. It's amazing he finished 4th in coach of the year voting and is widely respected in around the league.
Equally amazing that the only time his offense looked worth a crap was when he had 4 players running it that were mid season pickups. Equally amazing that such a great coach was unable to get out of the 1st round even after leading a series 2-0 twice. Equally amazing that his employeer held him in such high regard that he fired him after finishing 4th in the COY voting.
JVG ball was good for what the Rockets needed at the time which was to develop a tough D but the offense got lost along the way. I hope RA can incoporate a tough D with some offense that is not up tempo but free flowing.
BTW, how many players actually improved offensively under JVG? Head? well what else was he suppose to do since he came in as a rookie. Yao? There is one. TMac? Uh...no. TMac is not the feared offensive threat that he was prior to coming to Houston.
You lost me right there. I didn't mind his style of hoops at all. I enjoyed watching our guys play good halfcourt offense and stingy D. However, I can totally see how 90% of Rox fans were bored/bothered with it
Man, you are TOTALLY reaching there. TMac's play had to do with his back and the wear and tear on his body. The guy had FREE REIGN to do whatever he wanted. He just didn't do it as well. Plus, when you play on a LOTTERY team with one scorer, of course your scoring will be up. I have no problems with you disliking JVG or JVG-style hoops, but when you make statements like that, it really makes me laugh
You have to be kidding. You admit JVG succeeds with players he picked up in the midseason. So you admit JVG adjusted to new players who could play more up- tempo and run a fast break? Are you sure this is JVG we're talking about? Of course you attempt to turn that into a negative by claiming it proves that he destroys players in the off-season. You have to realize how dumb that sounds!
