How could anyone enjoy JVG's style of ball? Well, I guess if you enjoy defense, but even that was ugly whenever teams ran a PnR against us involving Yao. Meh...Ugly ball, better left forgotten. DD
Well, what if they win about the same? Would you prefer to see an uptempo game or a slow down defensive battle? DD
JVG system is simple, and efficient. system requirements: 1: robots. 2: nothing else. Input Variables: 1: "effort": How robotic an NBA player can be. 2: nothing else. Output results: 1: can beat any team if "effort" is there. 2: will fail eventually since NBA players are far from robots. I enjoy the failure part of JVG style.
I enjoyed watching the Jeff Van Gundy offense. It was a thrill a minute. I loved the way he ran the same motionless play every possesion and dared the opponent to stop it and when they did stop it, I loved the way he just ran it again anyway. It was awe-inspiring to see the play stopped ten times in a row (other wise known as a rocket scoring draught) and then bring in reserves to run the same play. Coaching at it's very best. I enjoyed watching our big man chase gaurds around the floor. Your bigs should be able to sacrifice defensive rebounding to keep gaurds out of the lane. Everyone knows the only thing you need a defensive rebound for is if you are going to run and have more possesions and since we never ran, it was just not a priority. i enjoy watching the opponent grab 15 extra chances against us just so we can show them we'll stop them again. I also enjoy swimming in a vat of sulphuric acid and wiping my a$$ with a corn cob covered with razor blades but I have always enjoyed the simple things
There are some good memories... McGrady Wills Rockets To Win T-Mac scores 10 points in final 24 seconds as Rockets stun Spurs 81-80 By Clutch DECEMBER 9, 2004 10:10 PM | BOX SCORE | HISTORY VS. SPURS In a season of absolutely disgusting and embarrassing Houston Rocket offense came one of their classic clunkers... capped by one of the greatest shooting displays, possibly in NBA history. Send thank you cards addressed to: McGrady, Tracy. With 52 seconds left at home against the San Antonio Spurs, the Rockets trailed 74-64. Many teams don't even bother to try to come back at this point. No heaves for three, no pointless fouls. It's over. Spare the fans the agony, promote your music album and move on to the next game. But Tracy McGrady simply d-o-m-i-n-a-t-e-d the finish. There is no other word to describe it really. If you didn't turn it off, if you withstood the gut-punch that is watching this offense operate and didn't leave the building, you saw pure greatness. http://www.clutchfans.net/game.cfm?gameID=2699
Really? Forget about the Rockets for a moment. You really see no difference in entertainment value between the Golden State Warriors and the LA Lakers? Records were about identical, but unless Kobe exploded for 50, who the hell wanted to watch the Lakers? On the other hand, the Warriors consistently provided watchable games. They were fun. And, in the end, isn't it about enjoying the basketball on display?
LOL!!! By the way MAV-HATER, you should change your signature to another wish you want to come true, like Save the Rockets Trade or Waive Alston, or something like that.
Good Call. Like Rashard opting out and taking a home town discount or Franchise buying out and having the tearful reunion.
The Warriors are fun to watch because their system brings out the passion and strenghts of their players. I hope under Adelman the Rockets will have the same result. I hope under Adelman we can steal some of their free agents! Gundy ball was historically one of the ugliest brands of basketball the NBA ever saw. The only thing more boring was the Cavs back in the day under Mike Fratello. That Cav team scored like 40 pts a game and tried to hold the other team to 35 pts a game.
the way i look at it, every second we played offense it hurt me to watch because if we committed a turn over or if we missed a shot we we're in for a rough night. sure we play great defense but what happens on offense? whenever we were down by 10 if felt like we were gone. we rarely ever scored 10+ consistently. we were always too reliant on two players and hoping that we can spot up shooters. thats a great plan because we have two players who can pass well but not a great plan when the defenses actually play d and we can't use yao as much. bottom line was JVG's style was very very hard to watch even when we won. you were never certain with the rockets winning when ever we had a lead and especially if we were behind.
Boy, revisionist history sure is fun! So, we managed the 5th best record in the league while missing our star center for nearly half the season, right? We are despartely in need of a talent upgrade, correct? And the coach's system was failing us too, right? Am I the only one that sees the disconnect in this logic? Back on topic, yes, I enjoyed Gundy's style of basketball. I disagreed with a lot of his play calling but the scheme was great, I think (Bill Murray from Caddyshack voice). Tracy by himself made the offense fun to watch and I think a lot of you need to go back and watch some games from last season again. The defence was a thing of beauty. Watch the rotations, specifically. There are times where, until I could go back and watch in slow motion, I would have sworn we had 6 guys on the court. Also, yes, Van Gundy should have been fired and yes, I am really looking forward to appreciating new things about Adelman's style.
I am sure JVG will get another HC job, but you have to wonder if other owners would be more hesitant to hire him because of his ugly ball approach. DD
four dull basketball seasons, 3 first round knock outs, 1 funny looking coach and a bunch of robots on the court were hard for me to look at. I enjoyed some moments, but if there were so great I would have remembered them while I'm writing this....
LETS ALL GET IN ON THE PILE ON!!!111 Man it sure was boring watching this team play the second half of '05 with a healthy squad when they were regularly scoring in the 120's and blowing teams out by 30! And hell, I couldn't bear watching them struggle their way to the 5th best record in the league this year with major injuries to their star players and a depleted roster! Boy, I wish they would have ran more this year - I mean Luther Head and Rafer Alston are such great decision makers and finishers on the break!!1 BTW, I'm dreading the Finals. I would hate to be fans of the Pistons or Spurs, teams that can expect to compete every year because of boring defensive based approaches. Go Warriors!!!11
I'm sure the Spurs fans think their team is fun to watch. Yes they play great D but they also have great offensive players in Duncan, Manu, and Parker. Their role players can all score to some degree even Bowen can hit his shots they get him in their offense. The Spurs also run the break well. The Pistons are much the same. Great D but also players like Rip, Rasheed, and Billups that can put it in the basket. If the Suns ever learn how to get defensive stops when they need them they can move deeper in the playoffs with their style.
Yeah, it was a great way to wind down the evening, change into PJ's, get a glass of wine, and fall asleep before the 4th quarter starts.
Oh, heck yes let's do it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Especially since you soooo like piling on me these days !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For that year, the Rockets averaged 95.1, but you said 2nd half, so let's take a look Game by game breakdown on Clutch fans.net They went 29-12 and averaged 98.51 PPG over that last half of the season, hardly regularly scoring in the 120s per game in fact they only scored in the 120s a grand total of TWO times during that 2nd half you are so gloriusly referring to, even if you include the times they got close 115+ it is still only 8 times during that 2nd half. And for the record, that INJURY depleted team you are referencing this year scored more than 120 THREE times. Or maybe because they can play both offense and defense, how did the Spurs do against the Jazz so far on offense? A more apt comparison because the Rockets lost to the Jazz. Wow it looks like the Spurs are averaging 106.5ppg .....and giving up 98ppg Balance, got to play both offense and defense....Gone-dy ball is too one sided. Cabbage, you accuse me of being biased concerning V-Span....I contend that you are right there with me pal about JVG. DD
