My wife couldn't care less about diamonds or jewelry.

Newly weds should invest that money in a house or just save it. Can't believe someone would spend thousands of dollars on a freakin rock.

true, w/ the caveat that investment grade diamonds (~$100k/carat) have appreciated several multiples over the past decade are now in fact very difficult to even find if you want to buy them

You can always pass it down to your kids/grandchildren. That's what we plan to do.

The article is about why you want to. Diamonds look exactly the same as other clear gems(man made and natural) and doesn't have any intrinsic value. It's because we as a society bought into very well organized marketing.

This thread has only one direction it can go, and it's nowhere I want to be.

this is true for the junk diamonds, the dregs if you will......before 100 years the diamond engagement ring didn't exist....then de beers started using hollywood actresses to market their knickknack stones to the masses. however flawless polished diamonds have been prized for hundreds of years. royalty and other elite have coveted, plundered, and traded them. you can look up 'golconda mines'. as with other investments, such as picasso's for instance, it is the rareness that holds the intrinsic value.

No kids to pass it down to. So I don't see any reason to waste money on jeweler y on our part.

It hurt my bank account so bad buying an engagement ring last week... her sister's marrying a pharmacist so I had to do my best to keep up.

Who buys an engagement ring in the hopes of it being a good financial investment?

Well, even if you don't buy it for investment that doesn't mean it's not a sham. Or at the very least one of the greatest marketing ploys of the last hundred years.
Let's say somehow they convince us that buying tulips is the way to a woman's heart. They convince women that they all want tulips. And they limit how many tulips are out on the market so we pay a lot more than they are really worth. And 100 years from now all the kids are mortgaging their future to get tulips for each other.
You would call that a sham, no?

Diamonds are a luxury which is why the diamond market went to crap when the economy tanked where as gold and silver prices went through the roof.

Only the rarest(100K or above) of diamonds have their value go up. The diamonds that normal people buy have little intrinsic value.

It really doesn't suck considering everything I'm getting that comes with it. I don't feel terribly obligated to share my reasoning with a message board knowing I'm addressing people like you. Just thought I'd share for those who also identify. It lessens the burden. There are lots of scams in this world. Some things, no matter how nonsensical, you just have to deal with in life. If you're trying to tell me that ALL women can be reasoned with when it comes to these things, it suggests to me that you don't understand women or at least your options are exceedingly limited. Something with dreads and some nice hairy pits maybe? Mmmmm... hot. Want me some of that.

And before that, they did it with something called marriage.

    They, being religious brainwashers.

You can always point fingers at someone, but diamonds are shiny and not thought of as investments in lower tier markets.

If you're a guy, the only status symbol you should ever wear is a watch. Anything more is SDS.

Because da1 is the worst poster in the history of internet forums, and does all he can to make the Hangout horrible.
