Supposedly the oil cap was off and that caused the engine to malfunction. Also, I agree, that there is no way you could predict where the car would malfunction.

I also find it odd that the police weren't looking for Kyle Butler who Trinity's family would have told them had just fled the scene.

As far as the storyline, the whole marriage angle was making it very difficult to believe Dexter could get enough time away from his family and job to dabble in serial killing on the side. Most married guys can't get time to hang out with their friends much less stalk someone, set up an execution room, murder them, cut them up, clean up and go to their boat and deposit their remains in the ocean.

why is it hard to believe that dexter simply followed him from the body shop? he knew exactly where he was going to be when he found that receipt.

No, that's pretty much how it happened but the issue is the oil cap...how did he slip it off without the mechanics or Trinity finding out and....

My question is when did Trinity kill Rita if Dexter was tracking him from the mechanics and it was still day while Rita's message said she saw the moon?

Trunks are not soundproof. You can hear a lot:

    - The car breaking down.
    - Whether there's any traffic around.
    - Whether there's any additional people around.

I just assumed Dexter staked out the garage and followed him in his car, waiting for any opportunity to strike.

Anything is possible, but as a viewer I expect to be able to make sense of a scene, it appeared poorly executed. I think they should have cut this episode into two, it needed further explanation, they put too much into one episode.

They tried too hard to leave the story open ended...

Rita's message said it was supposed to be a beautiful moon that night, implying that it wasn't visible yet.

Sorry, but that's a weak argument. Yes, you could hear the car breaking down, but there's no way to guarantee that there's no other cars around, or approaching the area from a distance just because you don't hear one from inside the trunk. Also, Trinity had music playing so it's not as though it was silent to begin with.

    Seriously.

It's like someone watching Stargate and commenting on how fake the visuals on a laptop are, but having no problem whatsoever with the giant puddle-like portal to other planets and galaxies.

I want Dex to get caught next season. Him vs everyone.

...and then Doakes comes back out of nowhere to battle Dexter in the ultimate showdown. ;)

    Good call

In defense of the super detective skeptics here I will agree that this should have been stretched into two episodes. As many things happened in this episode as the rest of the episodes in the season combined.

That would be awesome (yet inexplicable and impossible). I liked Doakes a lot more than Quinn.

For whatever reason, don't think they will go with a Doakes/Dexter storyline AGAIN although it seems obvious. I figure Quinn will somehow help Dexter inadvertently but just hope they don't go down the same road again.

Why Rita? She was a good person....sigh...Oh well, gut punch it was I guess it was meant to be...we hurt the ones we love..

Well... we already know that one of Trinity's kids was willing to kill for him... what about the other two? (Just mulling over the possibilities...)

I had pondered that earlier in the show (I thought maybe one of his kids, other than the reporter, had shot Lundy) but later episodes revealed that Trinity's immediate family members were good people, and had deep-seeded hatred for him. They weren't brainwashed pawns, and they weren't seeking his affection like Christina was. Plus, they said the mother threw up when she saw the images of Trinity's victims...she had no idea he was a killer, so again, basically zero chance that the family was a part of his killings in any way.
