I can tell what happened: Miami knows more teams will get involved in the Watson sweepstakes in the offseason. You can feel it around the league. The price will go UP in the off-season with competition. Miami is trying to get ahead of that since they are Watson's preferred destination.
If that's the reasoning, Texans should just wait till the offseason to get a higher package return as well as knowing what exact pick they are getting in the draft.
Recover from what, though? Trading Watson? That was going to happen no matter what. Take the allegations out of the conversation, and he's still probably not playing football for this team today. The damage is done, and he needs to go. If anything, the trade should 100% be viewed as a positive for the franchise moving forward, even if the return isn't exactly what we may have been hoping for at the start of all of this drama. You're getting rid of a guy who doesn't want to play for you who is, by all accounts, not a good person and will likely be facing a lengthy suspension (if not worse) down the line. Now, will they recover from having Cal as the owner and having Eastery too involved in the organization? That's another story. But at least the franchise has a GM in place who's shown he can make competent moves and understand value. If he gets this trade right, gets some legitimate draft capital back and starts hitting on some picks, this team might be in a better position in 2-3 years than it was last season with Watson.
I think the Texans want this to be over with. Watson still has to settle. If they can get the 3 1-st and 3 other pieces...they would be happy. Also, Watson's contract doesn't kick-in til the offseason. I think they save money if the do the trade before then.
Makes sense. Another angle is their owner, Stephen Ross is 81 years old and just dropped ~135 mil(?) on a new training facility. Right before the season started he dropped this quote: “I hope to be here hoisting a Super Bowl trophy in a short period of time,” said Ross on Tuesday. “With the emphasis on short.” Miami went into the season with playoff expectations and are now 1-5. Unfortunately Tua's development is slow (or he's just not good). Luckily, there happens to be a pro bowl QB just sitting around in Houston, asking to go to your city.
I don’t care how good of a trade package they get for Watson. None of it really matters if you don’t have a franchise qb. Texans will be in a constant rebuilding phase until they find their next franchise qb, which could take another 15 years.
MIA offered a ton .. Jack Easterby is talking them down because God does not permit taking advantage of others or stealing. I would believe it
Lol it took so long because of incompetence at the GM position. It’s obviously good news that Miami is having to trade more players to get additional picks to add on to the deal. Yes, there’s Easterby, but Caserio has been a breathe of fresh air so far.
You understand what he had to work with? Throwing around late round picks in hoping to find something is smart. Most of those pick won't make your team anyway. And you can't count Mills. Mills has potential to be at least a quality backup in this league. He just needs more time. You want a GM to admit his mistakes and move on quickly.
What GM is perfect? If you recall, the last GM traded Hopkins for peanuts, and resigned guys to overpriced contracts. The players you listed were traded for or signed for minimum resources so in the end there’s not much lost. On Lawson, why are you considering him a bad move? They traded him for a late round pick whereas Mckinney is not on a roster so seems like a very small win to me
