Oh, you've polled the entire league, have you? I'll tell you this: the entire league would absolutely - in a 1:1 exercise - trade the 32-year old QB for the 25-year QB if their production was similar. Of the seven categories, Allen is top 5 in 2: completion % & total yards. I haven't looked at total TDs - but I would assume he's probably top 5 there, too. Watson might jump up there. Watson is top 5 now in four categories (Y/A; rating; total yards; interceptions). Allen is having a terrific year and I would have zero issue putting Allen in the Watson/Wilson tier.
What are the team defense and rushing offense ranks of those other quarterbacks' teams? I think Deshaun deserves credit for playing this well despite having basically no support from the ground game or defense. There are other QBs putting up good numbers, no doubt, but probably not that many dealing with the void of complementary football that is the Houston Texans. Think that must be taken into consideration when comparing QBs (e.g. Tannehil looks great when complemented by elite running game; not so great when running game is mediocre).
No; they're not. I took the seven most relevant QB metrics. You're welcome to add more - here's the problem with that: there aren't any. Those are the big ones. I didn't exclude any. But, again - add what you'd like. But don't pick 2 and pretend we're doing the same thing.
Ok so Russel Wilson is better than Watson. Who else? Is your whole point that there are maybe 3 or 4 guys you'd take over Watson? I guess I am not following the point of this discussion. Watson isn't the best in the league but is clearly good enough to win with - what should the Texans be doing differently at the quarterback position right now vs all the much more glaring holes on this roster?
I think you would be surprised by some of the numbers. Wilson and Allen haven’t had a ton of defensive help. Run game is strong with Allen, not so much with Wilson. Numbers as a whole are weird this season.
I agree. The discussion turned into Watson being as good or better than Wilson. I’ve been consistent in saying he’s right there at the top of the second tier of QBs. Behind Mahomes, Rodgers and Wilson.
So by this logic you would take the 22 year old QB on a rookie contract over the 25 yr old about to make 40 mil a year right?
I don't think these stats are everything but if we're using them, seahawks are ranked one slot lower on defensive yards, one slot higher in defensive points. Their rushing offense is substantially better than the texans, so not sure exactly how much worse their offensive line is than the texans (maybe worse in pass blocking but better in run blocking)? So it still seems arguable to me the Seahawks have surrounded Wilson with more support than Deshaun has, and even if we accept the premise that Wilson has less to work with, I still ask, so what? Should the Texans jettison Watson and hope to find the next Russel Wilson? Or us your objective just to throw some water on the Deshaun stans?
No objective other than trying to get a dose of reality to some in here. I love Watson, there aren’t many players I would choose over him. I think the contract is going to hinder the team and not align with timelines. There’s a big contingent in here that likes to knock other players to prop up Watson. And make every excuse in the book for his shortcomings (those have gotten a lot better)
Total TDs? As I said, maybe; I haven't looked at total TDs but assume he is. Passing TDs - Allen is tied for 6th. Watson is tied for 5th in INT among QBs with 12 starts.
Harder schedule is also debatable. Winning against the Texans has also helped their records. Seahawks have been winning, even with the same team deficiencies as the Texans (poor defense, bad Oline)
Allen also has 6 rushing TDs and still more passing TDs than Watson. The qualifier is games and not completions? For the record I would not pick Allen over Watson. I also would not put either in Wilson’s tier. Just using your season logic to prove a point.
Seahawks don't have a management/organization deficiency, Texans do. Seahawks defense in the last 7 games has been playing significantly better, Texans defense has been playing slightly better. Texans haven't lost to a losing team all season. Seahawks just lost to an NFC East team.
