Desantis seeks to punish Disney for disagreeing with him

    I don’t want to give the impression that I hate Disney or think they’re evil. Yes they’ve done a lot of innovative things and I see many of the moves they’ve done as enlightened pragmatism. At the same time they’ve used their market share to dominate and take over competitors. While Disneyworld might have some cutting edge sustainable design and they treat those employees well many of their products are made with sweatshop labor and their production and marketing is part of the wasteful consumer culture.

    My main point though is that like so much else these days we’re wrapped in a zero sum partisan game. If you don’t like DeSantis or this law we should support Disney. If we like DeSantis and this law we should condemn Disney.

    The attack on Disney is in full swing





    But this has to be one of the most stupid strategic moves by DeSantis. Disney is a huge draw in Florida and one of the biggest employers in the state. He's not just hurting Disney by doing this - he's hurting the entire state's hospitality and tourism. People don't just go to Disneyworld when they come here - there's tons of other businesses and cities they go to.

    All because Disney is opposing his ban on the word "gay", the right is in full cancel culture mode.

    @tinman is jumping on the cancel culture bandwagon on this one.

    Agreed. I hate a lot of their entertainment. I hate ESPN. I don't think it is a culturally rich vacation destination and they definitely work hard to crush competition, are aggressive with copyright enforcement even when used in education.

    At the same time they have been very proactive and beneficial to education especially though Pixar, etc.

    Disney is a mixed bag to say the least. But I admire some things about them and despise others. I just want to sprinkle the good or bad for the sake of balance.
