While I don't expect him to stay, Deron had already made it clear he wouldn't blindly commit to the Nets. As constructed, he's not staying. Should they pull off a miracle and land Dwight Howard, he will.

I doubt the Nets have any intention of giving him away - they are going to press hard to change his mind, just like how the Cavs and Magic made major deals (futility) trying to make LeBron and Howard happy.

Maybe he's thinking of returning home to Dallas... I dont exactly think "Deron Williams" when I think of NYC anyhow..... I don't think he cares about endorsements..... Good for him... Crazy but Good

Howard would be about the same that he is now. He does not keep position in the post, is very limited in his moves and does everything possible to avoid having the offense run through him when the game is on the line.

I understand we are all Rockets fans but LET's BE REAL. Deron doesn't want to sign an extension with Nets who are moving to Brooklyn and have plenty of cap space to sign another star.

Why the hell would he want to sign with the Rockets? Is is big market? Are we winning right away with him? Can we give him another star to play alongside...? COME ON

Deron is not opting out of the last year with the Nets because he doesn't like the team.

He's opting out because he can get a 5 year deal as opposed 2 year extension.

The Nets just have to work harder to prove that it's worth staying there.

Really hope this is the case. Nothing would be better than Dwill and Dwight getting together and destroying the Knicks.

It is all about the Benjamins and years. It is a risk though. The Williams are now praying that he doesn't break a hip.

Didn't look that way in the playoffs. His post scoring has vastly improved in the last year.

Melo and some of these players are idiots for not wanting to play for the Nets because of the past. The entire franchise has done a 180 and now you have an ambitious deep pockets owner who already spent on a good coach and GM, you are moving to a great market in brookyln wth a billion dollar arena and a chance to start something new and be the centerpiece. They already have Brook Lopez in a perfect 2-3 option and is a 7 footer, they have a great glue guy in humphries at the 4. They are a piece or two and have the cap space to get it. I don't get why they can't see that

This. People are misintepreting this as him leaving the Nets for sure. Why would he disclose that info if he still has a whole season to play and create tension or even hostility between him and the net's fans?

Because D-will more than any other player in the nba except maybe KG has been openly hostile to the new cba.

C'mon Deron, you can't all play for the Knicks.:p

Seriously, NJ shouldn't be too worried and I'm sure they won't have a firesale. This isn't the old Nets. This is a team with a new billionaire owner and moving to Brooklyn with Deron Williams' Bird rights and enough cap room to sign a max free agent from a large crop of good available players. They're going to keep Williams and get a big FA (Howard or otherwise) and they'll be better than the Knicks in '12-'13 and be the new darlings of the NBA for bringing basketball to Brooklyn. Williams just has to sit tight for a few months and not get injured.

More stupid free agent drama, and we'll be putting up with this crap for the rest of the decade.

Max $39 million if he signs an extension.

Max $101 million from the Nets if he becomes a free agent.

    Move along, nothing to see.

Prokhorov's got a whole year to convince Williams that Brooklyn is the place to be, and that the Nets can put together a decent team, look for them to try to grab Dwight Howard or sign Nene or both. I gurantee Lopez is not staying on that team much longer.

Also, a couple of things work in their favour

    1) They can give the most money.
    2) The Nets are not in a small market like Cleveland or Utah, while they may not capture all of NY's tri state area, Brooklyn is pretty big and believe or not, there are some Net fans in New Jersey.
    3) I doubt Williams tries to go to the Knicks, Paul wants to go there and the Knicks cannot sign both unless they pay both of them a ridiculous amount of money and there is no way in hell the Nets are trading him anywhere-especially the Knicks.

    4) Not many places for him to go, aside from the Knicks, the teams I can think of with cap space are Sacramento and Los Angeles, IMO the the Nets w/ Williams > Kings with Williams and if the Nets can get a solid big man then they're just as good as LA.
