I am very surprised on how the turn of events really helped us out in the end. One thing is for sure, Morey knows how to find value.... but now we need to change value into appreciation of assets....not like the recent housing market. there is value out there but not much in going upwards...
fisher gave up his entire 3.4m salary for 2012-2013. We are not on the hook for anything next year regarding fish.
wow that's pretty awesome... you know he didnt want to do that. So does getting slightly larger expiring contracts for camby and fisher help our cap situation any more? Stinks we have room to sign 1 max and 1 near max and no one is on the market to sign.
Unfortunately, there will likely be a small cap hit next year. I'm working on a new cap update that will explain this. Sorry for the teaser.
Is it because that buyout amount (pay for the rest of the season, approximately $850K?) will be distributed over the remainder of the contract? Given the length of the remainder of this season, this would end up being 20/80 split, menaing the cap hit next season will be $680K? Is this proportional distribution required even if Fisher agrees to decline is player option?
That doesn't make sense. If he opts out then that terminates the contract. He's not on our books anymore. I'm sure Bima will explain but I see no reason why we would take a hit on him if he truly opted out. Of course once he agrees on the amount of 850,000 whether he opts out or not would be irrelevant to him. So perhaps he didn't even bother to go through the opt out process and just signed whatever to get out of his contract.
The thing I'm impressed most with Morey about is that he is juggling the big picture and little picture things at the deadlines so well. We know he is working the phones for these big deals, but he still manages to put together something at least twice a year that makes "something out of nothing". I'm sure that he was fielding 50 offers in the days preceding the deadline, and he managed to pluck one out of that mess.
So, I wonder if Fisher's agent put in set-off protection into the buyout agreement in order to waive his team option. If we assume the agreement had no set-off protection, Morey was literally paid to take Dallas' draft pick off of the Lakers' hands. Jordan Hill was owed 22/82 of his remaining $2.855M, which comes out to ~$766k for the rest of the year. Derek Fisher was owed 22/82 of $3.4M, which is ~$912k. The CBA provides for a team who waives a player to reduce the amount of money they owe a player whom they waive and signs a new contract by half the difference between the one year vet minimum and whatever his new contract is. I'm not 100% sure if the minimum is allowed to be prorated down, but under the assumption that it isn't, since Fisher's new contract calls for $1.9M to be paid, the Rockets can still set-off ($1.9M-$762k)/2 = $569k of their obligation, reducing Fisher's salary to $343k, about $420k less than what Jordan Hill would have cost in salary. I also don't believe that Fisher will cost the Rockets a single cent of cap room next year, based on Larry Coon's wording here: combined with: Fisher has no way of officially waiving his option unless the Rockets and Fisher's agent mutually amend the contract to remove his option year. As such, when he is actually waived by the team, his contract is for only one year, $3.4M. Since there are no remaining years on this amended contract, the entire cap hit of the remaining $900k will be applied to this year, rather than spread out over this year and next. This is almost like the "basketball-reasons" trade in reverse in terms of reporting; while in that case, information leaked out that just made the trade seem worse and worse for the Rockets side, (Scola/Martin to Scola/Martin/Dragic, to Scola/Martin/Dragic/NY pick), the Fisher trade keeps getting these small improvements that have made it an absolute steal of a deal. Here's to hoping the Mavs remain in the lottery 6 years from now!
All will be explained soon. Cap update coming out soon. Either today or tomorrow, most likely. I'll have the full skinny on the Fisher buyout and its cap implications.
BimaThug, Thanks, waiting for your thread. I am very interested in knowing how much free cap can we have in next year after this trade.
