Gene, I thought OP was through his illness, and I thought he's been around periodically. There was one thread where some newbies (and even a couple of regulars) gave him some grief, which he didn't really need at the time ... nor deserve. Maybe I'm surmising this wrong, but he was a lot less active here after that cr*p.
SF3 used to take virtually all eight seconds to bring the ball across the time line -- he rarely passed it across quickly. JVG was always waving his arms to push the ball -- Francis never did. I think that is all he means by the eight seconds.
Bottom line: The Rockets no longer need an "athletic" PG - they simply need a guy who, like Kenny Smith, can bring the ball across midcourt and start the offense without turning the ball over. Basically it's going to be the easiest PG job in the world with Yao and T-Mac on the team. Don't worry. I think I see where JVG and the Rockets are going with this, and it is in the right direction. A basic role player point guard - not someone with a name, and not someone who is too old and asking for too much $$$ (see Brent Barry, Derek Fisher).
Tinsley is certainly another guy that fits Doc's post. He is only 26 and makes roughly $1.6 this season, $2.4 next. Indiana is certainly in the middle of NOWHERE. Indiana is a team that has been mentioned as a location for Dampier and maybe they would want to free up some cap with our TE to get him. Still trying to figure how the whole 08 secs. & 3 DRIBBLES can match Tinsley though. I wonder if the salaries Doc posted for the other three guards add up to something somehow also. Who knows.
True, but wasting virtually all of the time line clock frustrated JVG, perhaps more than we will ever know. I think the "out of nowhere" hint is the core of Doc Rocket's riddle.
Antanas Sireika is keen to emphasise the team concept that has made Lithuania one of the best sides in the world and is reluctant to single out players. But he can't hide his admiration for star point guard Sarunas Jasikevicius, one of the heroes of the Baltic country's triumphant Eurobasket last summer in Sweden. Jasikevicius was outstanding for Lithuania at Eurobasket 2003 "Sarunas has many outstanding qualities," Sireika said. "He is a leader in his nature, not only on the basketball court but in life as well. "This helps him manage the team very well. For the last two years, I think, he has been hitting the peak of his basketball career. "I believe that his assists are the best in Europe. Apart from that, he is an outstanding scorer as well. Sarunas is a player that each coach is willing to have in his squad." The Kaunas-born Jasikevicius, who shone at NCAA powerhouse Maryland before launching his hugely successful European pro career with Lietuvos rytas in 1998, then spent a couple of seasons with Slovenian giants Union Olimpija Ljubljana. His career truly took off in Barcelona, though, where he helped the club win numerous titles - including a treble of honours in 2002-3 - before switching to Israeli giants Maccabi Tel Aviv last season and helping them romp to title success on both the domestic and European fronts. Barcelona's inability to keep hold of Jasikevicius, the most valuable player of the European Championships, contributed to their struggles in the recently completed campaign in 2003-4.
Same here. Doc simply meant it could be a trade/player that hasn't been mentioned in the press or in rumors. Lately, Doc has been quite literal.
Many thanks. Sarunas Jasikevicius, Maryland Class: Senior Position: Guard Height: 6'4" Weight: 190 DOB: March 5, 1976 Hometown: Kaunas, Lithuania High School: Quarryville (Pa.) Solanco Vital Stats: 12.6 points per game, 3.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 40.1% three-pointers by Albert Lin There is no question why Sarunas Jasikevicius came to this country. The United States is the land of opportunity, after all, and that is exactly what Jasikevicius is looking for. "My parents want me to come here because of education. Basketball comes second to them," he said. "But for me, it comes first. [The NBA] has been my goal from the first time I knew what it was all about." When things are going well, as they are now, Jasikevicius (pronounced yes-uh-KA-vi-shus) seems mere months from realizing his dream. "There ain't no way he's not going to play in the NBA," the league's director of scouting, Marty Blake, told The Washington Times two years ago. "That kid can really knock it down. It's funny that he's the one guy on [Maryland] that has can't-miss potential." Paradoxically, when Blake made that pronouncement Jasikevicius was in the midst of deciding whether or not he wanted to transfer. With seniors Duane Simpkins, Johnny Rhodes and Exree Hipp ahead of him at the wing positions, he was not getting the playing time he thought he deserved. He had been willing to sit for one year, but as a sophomore he felt he was being denied a chance. "That was the bottom of everything," he said. "I was like, 'This is it for me.'" After analyzing the circumstances, however, he decided to stay in College Park for the obvious reason: With Simpkins, Rhodes and Hipp set to depart, playing time would be plentiful. Jasikevicius has started every game since. As a junior, he went from 10th on the team in minutes to fourth and was the Terrapins' No. 3 scorer. This season he's been even better, improving his numbers in every department but rebounds. In addition to his shooting ability, Jasikevicius is a fine passer and has improved his defense. "We're not afraid to put him on anybody," coach Gary Williams said. In the back of his mind, there always loomed an option: Jasikevicius could pack his bags and begin earning money playing basketball in his native Lithuania. "Every time I go home, they offer it," he said. But even at his low point, he never seriously considered the suggestion. "I don't want to go there," he said. "I want to go to college and see if I can do any better than Lithuania." So far, so good.
Cohen: I'm almost sure popeye hasn't posted since his illness. If he has someone please correct me. I'd love to hear he was doing better. Gene: pops changed his name cause he let Cat's agreement to re-sign out of the bag too soon, not over a bet. Everyone: I haven't been paying close attention to the moves this off season and I know this is insanity driven by wishful thinking, but while people are considering Bibby et al, can someone tell me why no one's dreamcasting for Sam Cassell? Hudson's still there, right? Is there any way at all this isn't utter madness? There's no one I'd rather have back than Sam.
I agree I would rather have AD or DJ. We already have the quick little guy in Lue, rather have a bigger 1 or combo guard to provide different options, and preferably one with 3 point range. Trading for AW or Snow I think I would prefer over Speedy as well, though again I think DJ or AD is even better unless our docs think AW is fully recovered and looks in the form when he and Antoine Davis carried the Carter-less Raptors to the playoffs (2 years ago I think).
Everyone please stop. This is becoming sad. He meant that we need a player who can advance the ball past midcourt to avoid the 8 second midcourt violation. We're not getting Mike Bibby. Please, stop.
Let's break down our needs - a guy who can dribble, is unselfish, can hit the outside shot, can play defense, is relatively young and can beat the :08 second clock and will not DRIBBLE, DRIBBLE, DRIBBLE....any ideas? Damon Jones? Antonio Daniels? OR....a TRADE THAT COMES OUT OF NOWHERE!!! Hmm.... "and can beat :08 second clock" The Bulls? a trade involving the bulls? Hmmmmm....
I seem to recall him referring to it in the past tense, and mentioning that some one else on the board knew what he went through. Maybe I'm wrong, but I hope not.
