I still wonder is all this falderal is a biproduct of the Feigen/B'bury Blog from last week. There has not been any clarifying words about possible Rox interest of which I am familiar. It all appears to be from that Denver article (and thus? the Blog reference???).

However, if there is truth a #1 for Bonzo would be too too steep. The TE would be a nice thing for Kings to have in their 'back pocket' for a rainy February day).

I would be surprised if we got Wells. I dont wanna sound negative but I dont know we can pull it off. It might get close like every deal we pursue but it never goes thru at the end.

I wouldn't give Bonzi more than a 1 year deal, just to keep him on his best behavior. If he fits in and helps us out of the 1st round, then you can talk about signing him for another 3 years.

I totally missed the within 48 hours part as well. I think there is a BIG chance of this going down, I don't care if he's signed for one year or 5, I just wanna see him in a Rockets uni. Additionally if he only signs a one year deal that would mean he wants to get some $$$ next year so he will have extra motivation

Interesting stuff from the Bonzi article posted above..

I wonder if they are talking the 2.1 mil left from the MLE or a S&T with the 4.2 mil Traded player exception.

I read from the Sacramental Bee that the Bonzi to Denver trade talks went nowhere because SAC didn't want to take back salary to go over the tax limit. I'd think the TPE + some inducement would be a good return for SAC since it beats losing him for nothing and they still stay under the cap.

I gotta admit, I am bumswazzled by this. I did not believe it was under consideration.

Might there also be a 4, or 4/5 in the future, as well?

PS If Bonzi, then ciao to Head, right Old Man? :D

Free agent Wells talks with Rockets
Spending limit makes pursuing guard a long shot

    By JONATHAN FEIGEN
    Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

Free agent Bonzi Wells met with Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy and general manager Carroll Dawson on Monday at Toyota Center as the Rockets stepped up their long-shot pursuit of the veteran guard.

Though the Rockets are limited by the salary cap and some of their free-agent spending this summer, Wells has clearly not ruled out the Rockets while also considering the Nuggets, Heat and Bobcats.

Wells, who went from expecting to be a top free agent to searching for a place to land two weeks before training camps open, replaced longtime agent William Phillips last month, with the switch to Merle Scott forcing a delay in the already protracted process.

Wells, who turns 30 on Wednesday, averaged 13.6 points and 7.7 rebounds with the Kings last season and 23.2 points and 12 rebounds in the playoffs against the Spurs.

After earning $8 million last season, he turned down a five-year, $36 million offer from the Kings, a strong indication that an offer of a mid-level exception would not work. The Kings instead signed John Salmons, and the majority of teams over the cap spent their mid-level exceptions.

The Rockets have just $2.1 million of their mid-level exception remaining to offer unless they can work out a sign-and-trade deal with the Kings. The Rockets have a $4.2 million trade exception in which they could sign a free agent for as much as $4.2 million and send only a draft choice, but as with any sign-and-trade arrangement, that would require an agreement with the Kings.

Wells was the 11th pick of the 1998 NBA Draft out of Ball State and was immediately traded by the Pistons to the Trail Blazers, where he played five-plus seasons before he was traded to the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies sent him to the Kings for Bobby Jackson and Greg Ostertag.

Wow! Wow! Wow! If Bonzi somehow comes to Houston, then this is the season the Rockets can contend. I expect nothing less than WCF.

It looks as though our front office is making a serious attempt to land Bonzi. These next few days/weeks could prove to be quite interesting if we can get Sacramento to find interest in any assets we have to offer.

This could be big...but I think if it happens, it will have to happen quickly.

If we land Wells I will be very satisfied with the summer (trade still hurts a little...value wise). Bring him off the pine for instant offense.........

Mark Berman is the man, they just showed an interview he had with Bonzi at the airport. Berman is always on top of Rockets news.

    WOW!!

I was seriously under the impression that we were not in contention. Our name was a little blurb in the Denver Post. But him saying that he could see making Houston his home, playing w/ 111 could open things up for him, etc. now I am really excited!! Not saying this will happen, but now I believe it could happen. Bonzi was once (a long long time ago) arguably the hottest free agent this year, and now we have a legit chance to land him for very little. The best part is, win or lose, we should know something soon.

I doubt it, because he still has talent and could be moved for something later I assume.

    What did Berman say?
