Biggest problem I see with this is that it looks like the only realistic way we could possibly get him would be to guarantee the guy he would be on our roster (or at least our payroll) for the next three seasons. But everyone knows that taking him on is a gamble in itself, because of his demonstrated 'knuckleheadedness', and it could very easily turn into a bad situation, and would you really want to risk poisoning this club for the next three years(essentially Yao's and TMac's PRIMES) just for the possibility that Bonzi may be able to keep himself under control and play nice with the team and with the organization, much less the local authorities?

ESPECIALLY when a guy like MoPete is gong to be freed up in just one more season?

Man I would run away from that deal so fast it would be a blur.

I am becoming convinced that it is as it always has been this offseason: Bonzi is not coming here.

Thanks for clarifying Kim, I don't like the first scenario either, we would almost certainly lose him to another team, but I was stating this would be the only way out of a SnT for Bonzi after year 1 on a 3 year deal, without player options. After which, we could only sign him with our MLE of $5.5M.

But, from your post it sounds like he could still opt out of a 2 year deal after year 1 and still make double our MLE...

"You can offer him $4.2 million for 2 years and give him the player option for year 2 or $6.3 million for 3 years and the player option for year 3 (I'm not calculating raises)."

If true, I believe this what we are trying to get him/the Kings to bite at. Granted, there are some that don't want to give our TE and draft pick for a "one-year rental," but it just may put this "win now" team over the top.

imo, the longer this takes, the more likely Charlotte is not making it easy for Bonzi with a bid that no one else can complete with.

    forchette49,
This is no TE + pick for a "one yr rental". SnT must be for 3 yrs (excluded option yrs). Kim was explaining MLE scenarios for 1, 2, or 3yrs, giving total dollar amounts for the length of each contract.

what exactly are you poisoning? a 34-48 team that hasn't been out of the first round in over a decade? some of you have a very peculiar lack of sense of urgency, especially considering the front office's neglect of future considerations (Gay trade).

Kim, I have to say I think you are correct reading across the topics. So I think the best we can do via the TE is start around 4.3 mil with 10.5% raises for 3 years, with a player option for year 4. It underpays him (4/19mil range) but does give him some flexibility, he can take the last year at 5.5 mil (I guess he would be around 34) or opt out. This may be the best deal for him left in FA (clearly Mia or Charlotte can kill us in short deals using the full MLE or capspace but they may not offer them), if SAC is reasonable in compensation.

More productive? What does that mean? With the exception of last year I believe Steve had him in Points, Rebounds, Assist, and Steals. If by productive you mean winning, I dont think you can blame Steve for the crap hes had to play with. Francis is more productive with a pair of flip-flops.

I say you get the job and the Rockets get Bonzi; one out of two wouldn't be too bad. Forget that, yeah it would. Get the job, Bonzi is rich. He can get his own job.

yeah francis is a little bit more productive offensively.. but cuttino plays a lot better defense so overall, its not a stretch to say cuttino is more productive..

Bonzi Wells is going to be a Nugget - a case could be made he already is a "Nugget" - but that's beside the point.

In regard to finances of the Bonzi situation, I believe the "capstone" principle is of some relevance. If the Rockets can obtain a luxury tax exception and at the same time exercise Birdsong rights, I feel relatively sure that the transposition of the reverse inculation clause can be evoked. This would trigger the Cousey principle and result in a net gain to both parties of 1.68 million which when added to the 2.3 million reserve fund will allow the override clause to be executed. This is simplest and most cost efficient way to finalize an agreement which will prove attractive to both parties.

How can we go 39 pages on a guy named Bonzi? Is this what we're reduced to? I guess so.

What I hate is having to check this thing every so often to see if anything's happened.

For sure. I do it to, of course. At least the discussion about the contract possibilities has been a gas. ;)

assuming we do miss out (and i suspect he's gonna be a nugget when its all said and done) I'll soothe my hurt feelings with this.

Bonzi one of ten most hated athletes!

    The Ten Most Hated Athletes
Who are the most roundly despised men in pro sports? We asked their peers—and they came out swinging

    7. Bonzi Wells
Not yet 30 years old, Bonzi Wells, shooting guard for the Sacramento Kings, has played for three NBA teams. “If you’ve got that much ability and you’re traded three times that early in your career,” says ex-NBA player and current ESPN commentator Tom Tolbert, “there’s obviously something wrong with you.”

Words like fumigate come up when people try to explain why GMs trade him. “It doesn’t bother him if his unhappiness infects the entire team,” says Memphis sportswriter Geoff Calkins, who recalls that when Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown was contemplating retirement (citing health reasons), “part of the calculus for Hubie was ‘It’s not worth it,’ and a big part of that was Bonzi. He helped bring Hubie down.”

When Brown’s successor, Mike Fratello, pulled Wells from a game at the end of last season, Bonzi threw a tantrum involving, characteristically, both profanity and projectiles. “This was in the final weeks of the season,” says Ron Higgins, another Memphis sportswriter, “when the Grizzlies were desperately trying to make the playoffs. Other players looked at him like, What the hell are you doing?”

Recalls sportswriter Jason Quick, who covered Bonzi in Portland: “He would flip off a fan and the next day say, ‘I blacked out.’ He’s such a con man. When the TV lights went on, he’d put on that million-dollar smile, then be an ass when they left.” He spat, infamously, on Danny Ferry. He b****ed constantly at his coaches. He was fined for bad-mouthing his own fans in Sports Illustrated. He made a veiled threat after a reporter wrote a negative story about him. “He told me, ‘Don’t be surprised one day if you show up to practice with a steak over your eye,’ ” Quick remembers. “And I said, ‘If you want to do that, I’ll be a rich man.’ He said, ‘I’m not dumb enough to do it myself. I’ll have my posse do it.’ ”

1st, Tom Tolbert is an acredible source IMO.
2nd, it seems to me that much of this Board would exalt in the idea that Bonzo could Hubie-late JVG :D

Bonzi full know wells our cash situation. His comments were :it could get done" and "its up to them. Probably meaning he would sign for the TE given a 3-4year contract. Sac just probably didnt like what we offered to them.

Then why do we want this jerk here? Forget about him. We will win without him. Bonzi, you had your chance to fool us. Now we know, forget about it, we don't want you! And when you come to Houston with the KittyKats, Yao is going to butt-bop you into the cheap seats. You have a face like an ugly woman anyway.

Are you suggesting that Bonzi's rep is a surprise to you -- and the Rox management? I suspect, strongly suggest, that the powers that be have had conversation with the power players that are as to how they feel about BW as their teammate.
